Ithought that too, watching on Fox without the pilot episode that gives you the crucial background and character setup.

Try renting the first DVD and watching it.

I thought firefly was alright, kinda cliche and predictable, but John Doe was fantastic, one of Fox's best efforts IMO. Too bad the ratings weren't high enough.

Despite the out of order episodes, not airing the pilot until it was cancelled, pre-empting it for baseball playoffs, and the friday night slot of death, it scored higher ratings than the first season of X-files or the Simpsons.

Hmm, I find the lack of specific mention of Alan Tudyk (Wash) and Ron Glass (Book) in the Variety article to be disturbing, since all the other regular cast members are listed. Hope they're not already involved in other projects, because the movie wouldn't be the same if either one of them was Dick Sargent-ed.
