Well, ask yourself: "do I like good games?" If you answered yes, buy FF12.

It was technically a great game, but didn't "wow" or hook me as much as other previous FF titles.

But, yeah...it's worth it.

Personal opinion:

Fighting, Mechanics, etc. = 90% awesome.

Storyline = blows.

I deducted 10% for the fact that:
a) You can lose out on getting the best weapon in the game about 5 hours in without any indication that you have.
b) You must earn the right to use spells and such... but your ability to purchase the actual spells is regulated, thus, stupid.
c) Lack of new game+... yes, I know the FF series has never done this, but that doesn't mean that people don't want it. It should ALWAYS be an option on RPGs.

Controlling the characters that you aren't actively using is cool because it's essentially like programming. You can really inflict some serious wrath on enemies if you take the time to set things up, much like the materia system in FFVII.

I hated it at first, but once I got used to it I really liked it.

As others have said the story line wasn't the greatest, but it had enough side quests to keep me busy for quite awhile.

It is now a greatest hits and can be had for $20. Well worth it IMO.

It is a big definite no. There are so many better rpg on ps2 like Tales of the Abyss and Suikoden V.

I finished it after putting in like 80 hours, but it wasn't very fun. It was my least favorite FF by far, although I have only played FFIV, FFVI, FFVII, and FFXII.

The storyline isn't the best, but it isn't bad, either. It's just that the pacing gets screwed up by all the marks that the game opens up for you, and many people will want to hunt marks as soon as they're available. I remember I was so busy killing marks before Archades that I forgot why I was supposed to go there, haha.

As far as c) goes, FFIV DS has New Game+.

@OP - I would recommend FFX before FFXII if you haven't played either.

It just seemed to me like there was little to no character development. The whole group constantly followed Balthier's oh-so-wise suggestions the entire game. Despite the fact that Vaan was the main character, he never really gained any leadership qualities or did anything to really prove his value to the party other than wanting to be a pirate. There was a lot of finding out back story about characters, but most of them were the exact same as when the game started.

Since I never really answered the question directly I'll just add in if you can find the game for like, $10-$15 it'll be money well spent, but don't feel a rush to buy it at a higher price than that.

I like to price games at a "cost per minute"... and seeing as I put about 100 hours into FFXII and bought it used for about $22, I'd say it was worth it.

Then again, it's arguable that Vaan is the main character.

Ehrgeiz was pretty fun, especially the dungeon crawl.

FFXII is worth your time, IMO. It may not be the best FF, but it's still a top-notch game.
