I'm sure I've read somewhere that just before death, or possible death, your body releases chemicals into your brain to "ease" the process - which is why some people report feeling peaceful.

Then again, a lady jumped off the roof of our building (17 levels) and she survived the impact for a minute or so before dying....she didn't look peaceful :(
