Is Engraving for security OK?

I am now paranoid about people stealing my things after they took my laptop.

I was considering getting an engraving pen (the one that makes all the little dots) to engrave my name into the side panels and motherboard tray, CD Drives, HDD (sticker?), PSU, ect.

Will it mess them up?

It will lower the value if you want to sell them. Otherwise it's OK if you're careful and don't do something stupid like engrave on a motherboard itself and cut through circuit traces in the process.

Being more careful with your laptop is the best security measure. Don't leave it unattended. Lock the bag you keep it in. Never leave it in your car, especially where it can be seen from outside.

When I was probably 7-8 years old, one of our barns was broken in to and they stole a bunch of stuff from our travel trailer.

My parents had some fairly expensive folding chairs (not your average $5 WalMart chair) and Dad used a woodburning pen to engrave our last name under the arms. .

The thieves just took something sharp and scratched the whole thing off.

The stuff they stole was recovered, but not because it was engraved.

It wouldn't hurt to put printed labels on everything. Maybe stick them some place not so obvious, like the underside of the CDROM drive. That way if your computer was stolen and sold to a pawn shop, it'd make recovery easier.

I've used those engraving pens before and they're pretty hard to use. It's hard to write decently with them, everything turns out like a 6 year old wrote it.

If you had your computer stolen at school (I assume middle school since you're 13), you're probably thinking it would be easier to prove it was yours if it was found in another student's possession. You can write down any serial number you have on the laptop, or engrave it with some identifying marks in a location where it'd be impossible to remove. If you plan on selling it, don't mark it up.

Talk to your parents, in the case of a break-in, home owners insurance should cover it. I am sorry about your laptop, if the pen will make you feel safer, I would get it, however, specifically for your rig, in your home, I think your covered anyway. (thats why I say talk to your parents, to confirm home owners insurance)
