Campaign wise, it is a lot better than it was released. Battle AI wise, it is slightly better, but still pretty piss-poor.

However, since I normally play ETW via multiplayer battles with friends, it is a blast. And once the multiplayer campaign comes out (hopefully soon), itll be even better.

On Vista 32 bit I still run into virtual memory errors after an hour or two of playing (which is a few minutes in Total War time).

It also seems like every other patch they cause a problem that was never there to begin with. It could be aggravating to start campaigns over and over again after save games become corrupted from patches.

I'm hoping 1.5 is going to be the last patch for awhile, but in reality I can see at least 2 or 3 major updates until 2.0. So don't sit on a campaign for too long.

Game is a total fail if you've ever played a TW title, worst of the worst by a large margin.

Last patch was it for me, nonstop CTD's, deleted never to be installed again and I own every TW title.

First let me say that I'm a fan of the game and of the series. Now after saying that I'll let the critic come out. ETW is as fixed as its ever going to be. I been saying that since patch v1.2 came out. Of all the games in the series, for me, it was the buggiest and most unstable of them all. CA is notorious for releasing a buggy game but the crashes is what upset me the most and I didnt have half as many as others complained about. A shame because I do enjoy playing it. I got my $50 worth out of it but for those that havent played it yet may want to wait til it hits $30 or less. Also look into the various mods available. There are some good ones out there.

See, this is what I'm talking about. 1.2 fixed the crashes for me, than they came out with 1.4 and everything started to CTD again. And it seems like it happens to an alternating fractions of players. It's just a pain in the butt. Since there is no way to play E TW without the updates, it's almost like you have to catch the wave during updates to play the game all the way through before the next patch bugs everything up again.

I really like E:TW and haven't had the CTD issues reported by some. It's true that the time frame is perhaps less exciting than Rome or Medieval, but they have really added a lot of depth over time and Empire is my favorite "slow" turn based strategy game when I'm in the mood to really think about each turn. I prefer Civ IV when I'm playing quickly and Anno 1404 when I just want the empire building component. I still recommend all three and probably play them all about equally.

Im not sure who to blame on this one. Vista for making PC a difficult platform or the developers. I think most of the 32 bit Vista operators are having the same troubles as me. And I think it's steaming from the sound system.

Since 1.5 I've played about 25 hours with no crashes. In fact, with the exception of the slow turns (cpu has the crunch all those factions) the game runs great. It's not perfect, but most of the flaws I see are design issues and not bugs. The AI is still problematic on occasion, but problematic to the benefit of the player. Battles are a little easier than they prob should be, given that the AI is stupid. However, those weaknesses aside in my opinion Empire is the best TW so far. I much prefer how I can manage individual towns within regions in order to combat rebellion, and its fun watching combat up close. Ship combat is a bit weak, but i tend to auto-resolve those.

If you can catch it on sale and have a reasonable machine, I say give Empire a go. Its not the best thing out there, but if you measure what it does right it is overall a great strategy game. At worse, it is to Napoleon TW what Vista was the Windows 7. Ensemble will likely take all the best stuff from Empire as well as a much tweaked version of the game engine (it is very good looking) and make Napoleon what Empire should have been. But Empire is great fun regardless.
