is DVI really nessisary

Everyone is more sensitive, I guess.

I have a 2005fpw, and it is noticeably more clear at 1680x1050 via DVI than via VGA. And this is with signal output from both a Radeon 9600 and a GF6800. The only reason to use VGA is if you absolutely have to. imho of course. 🙂

I found this link on the Dell 2001FP which retails for (currently) $639.00 at Dell (is there anyplace besides Dell to get one?).

One thing Dell's website does not mention, what is the response time on the 2001FP? Is there any ghosting in games and/or movies? Why doesn't Dell list the response time, or are they afraid to list it (you think if it was really low, they would list it).

I did notice they listed a lot of supported resolutions, but they didn't mention a native resolution. Is there a "prefered" resolution to the 2001FP, or does it look good in all supported resolutions (640x480 is one of my primary concerns).

Anyone with a 2001FP feel free to answer on response time and resolution support (and if you have a 2001FP, do me a favor and take a look at something in 640x480).

I have also wondered why they don't list it. Where is a source on the response time for it if it really is 16ms?

For 16ms quote go here:

I see absolutely no ghosting or blurring with this monitor like I did with my 191T. Even with the 191T it was slight unless there was an image with a ton of browns.

Native res is 1600x1200, if you get a 1280x1024 native res monitor like I originally did you will regret it. There's nothing quite like using 1600x1200 or higher.

As far as the "patchy screen" I sure don't see mine. I think this mainly applied to the first gen ones that came out last year. If I do get within 1cm of the screen I can see a slight line between the pixels, but once I move back 3cm it dissapears. So you do not ever see it. My old Samsung 191T didn't have this, but it's a non issue.

Dell has a pretty nice warranty, and from what I've heard on the forums, will gladly take back a monitor with 1 dead pixel. Almost no other online retailer will do that (ie newegg) without a restocking fee etc...

Ok, you guys have stated your opinions on text reading with DVI and such. Do you like to use ClearType font smoothing or Standard? Many of my friends prefer ClearType, but to me, it just looks really blurry...reminds me of bad geometry on a CRT.

What do you guys prefer?

I prefer cleartype, there's lots of different settings for it though so you just have to find the one you like, or don't use it at all.

Just thought I would give my opinion on whether or not DVI was "neccessary".

IMO its only neccessary when:
1. You work on the PC A LOT (6+hours a day)
2. You OFTEN view high quality video (DVDs)
3. You have a $2000 PC (no reason you shouldn't have the best cables too...)
4. You are a big-time gamer (games less than a couple years old).

Otherwise I think DVI is just a bonus, not a neccessity.

Makes a significant difference from my experience, even on 17in lcds. The difference gets greater as the screen get bigger imho.
We recently converted part of the office to 19in planar lcds with dvi. Most of the machines are new and include dvi, some are old and have only vga.
One of the developers on an older box complained that her screen doesnt look as sharp as the guy sitting next to her. All are running in native resolutions, btw.
To maximize the advantages of what lcd offers, you must use dvi. (imho)
