Is DVI limited to 1280x1024? And if so, why?

I don't know if this if of any relevance, but even the highest-end digital projectors on the market right now project at 1280x1024. They even use these in theaters, and to accomodate the 2.35:1 ratio of the screens, they use anamorphic lens. :| I want my 1920x1080 DLP projector!
