Is driving through an intersection on a yellow light dangerous?...

Um yeah... Did my drivers test (haha?... I passed at least)...

But the person giving my test took off all the points for the traffic lights because I ran a yellow light. I felt that I did pass the safety zone and if I stopped, it would be in the intersection...

Now I'm just wondering if that really is dangerous...

I barely passed with an 82/100, with a required 80 to pass...

That traffic light costed me 6 points

It isn't that bad, as long as you are out of the intersection by the time the red shows up.

My thinking is that if you are under the traffic light before it turns red, you're OK.

In any case, road test != real-life

Well, kind of. It is pretty much always true that you can go through a yellow as long as you aren't in there long enough to see red, but stopping is a whole nother story. Stopping could be worse, it could be better. But going through a yellow is pretty safe. Though I wouldn't try it that often.

Well in this scenario, I was like 2-3 yards from the line when it turned yellow... When I was 2/3 of the way through, it turned red. I was driving at the speed limit of 35 mph.

EDIT: Ricemarine, did not notice it was you! Did your parents buy you that brand new Camry yet? :p I'm going to wait for my mom to buy herself a BMW 3 series (probably next month), then I'll get a handmedown (2003 Toyota Tundra) from my dad, and I'll take the test then. My permit expires in December! :Q

The only reason why it is dangerous to run a yellow light is because still in some states as your light turns red not even a second later the other sides light turns green. As you are in the middle of the intersection as it is red and a person traveling on the other side side never reached the light as it was red continues to drive through at 70 miles per hours because well all know majority of the people never do the speed limit and then SLAMS into you...

Very rare occurence but it does happen...

There are some lights that are specifically time so that if there are other cars lined up to go and you're the last car going through the intersection, it effectively makes YOU go through a yellow whether you realize it or not; basically designed to save time. There are other stop lights that will go from green to yellow to red in a matter of a second..

personally I ****** hate stoplights around here as there is no consistancy whatsoever. If they were a lot more consistant I'd be much happier.

They will... My dad just has to decide to either trade in his honda accord or pay full. If he trades in, I'm going to have to do a bit more extra driving... But they did manage to get the dealer to drop to 22k...

Still $211 over invoice, but oh well.... depends what happens.

2-3 yards is less than a car-length. At 35mph, you'd be completely across the intersection in about two seconds, no? That's a really short yellow light..

Ya. At most big intersections where you would need to worry about this a lot, the yellows give you enough time. Maybe not on some country road. The light closest to my house is awesomely smartand the intersection is huge; if you are turning left, it has sensors to make sure that it doesn't give the opposing traffic a green while you are still out there.

B.S.

1. The guy would not take off points for running a yellow light when you were 2-3 yards from the light.
2. In order for your story to be true, the yellow light would have lasted approximately 1 second.

In conclusion, you're a terrible driver, and may god have mercy on us all.

In alot of states if any part of your car is still in the intersection when it turns red, that's going thru a red light.

In answer to your question, sure it's dangerous! So is slamming on the brakes the instant the light turns yellow. Evidently the tester thinks you made the better decision that time. The BEST decision (not always possible) would have been not to get in that situation.

The old Jimmy Reed song goes;

Red light, that's a stop light
Ya know the green light let's 'er go
If you see a yellow light
That means you're travelin' way too slow

Good luck
Jim

First, what is right and what is legal are not the same things. The general rule is that if you would have to lock up your brakes (or come extremely close to it), keep driving. Keep in mind that if it has just rained, that distance can be much further. It *is* illiegal to do this in most states, and you may or may not get a ticket, depending on he whims of the officer.

I hate short yellow light! Some of them have a duration of less than 3 seconds around here! :|
