Is diet Soda good for you? (if you're on a diet)

<< Where did you people hear about that heart failure thing? >>

It's a myth.....aspartame harmed lab rats in large quantities, not humans in miniscule quantities.

Diet Soda's better for you, mostly because all of the sugar is gone. There is like 40 grams of processed sugar in a can of coke...that's disgustingly unhealthy...and sometime people drink it by the bottle. The sugar is going to cause your heart failure sooner than any artificial sweetner will.

BTW, what is wrong if someone orders a steak and a diet coke? Why add extra fuel to the fire?!?! If they want to drink diet, let them...no need to criticize them for it.

Plain water is best for you. I started to only drink water, milk and beer. No more diet soda for me.

<< the artificial crap they put in there causes heart failure. I wouldn't touch that stuff if I were 800 pounds >>

Uh huh. And nutrisweet makes you blind.

There is evidence to prove that almost everything in the world gives us cancer. Fact is maybe diet sodas are bad, maybe they aren't. Yes there are studies showing they are bad, but there are also people who will fight to the death saying that milk is bad, or red meat, or dancing on wednesdays. Take your diet sodas in moderation anyway.

<< BTW, what is wrong if someone orders a steak and a diet coke? Why add extra fuel to the fire?!?! If they want to drink diet, let them...no need to criticize them for it. >>

My feelings exactly. I almost always buy Diet Pepsi and I've had people hassel me for getting 1500 calories in my pizza but a diet drink. "You're eating so much anyway, why bother?" say these lazy people, whereas my response is "I'm eating 1500 calories anyway the last thing I need is to top it up with extra sugar.".

if you are serious about dieting, you shouldn't be drinking soda at all... water and fruit juices and vegatable juices are much better for a diet compared to soda of any kind. you should also aviod coffee as well, probably more so than soda!

I don't think it will do you any good. Besides, I've seen a lot of people got out to eat, order a burger and fries and have a diet whatever to drink. I think it's all hype. Kinda like the Subway thing.

Twenty some replies and not one reply with evidence to back it up.

I for one am really interested in the issue simply due to my girlfriend being addicted to the stuff. She drinks it morning, noon and night. Where can you find serious information regarding diet sodas?

Drink it and see how you feel... If used to drink a lot of Diet Coke, and when I stopped drinking it I felt like I was thinking more clearly. I'm not sure if I was actually getting dumber or not, it just felt that way.

I don't like all the sugar in regular Coke normally. Keeps me awake at night, and it just tastes too sweet at times. I'll drink both, but normally buy Diet Coke for myself. I was raised on Diet Soda, so I guess it's just what I've gotten used to. I can't stand caffeine free diet soda though. Never have like the flavor of it.

<< I only drink diet soda, I switched because I found myself having a very unhealthy addiction to Pepsi. >>

I had the same kind of addiction to Coke, but instead of going diet, I just drink tea.

If you are going to drink a soda, diet should be it. If you are drinking a can in addition to your water, that is fine. Also, a 20 oz. bottle of Coke has something like 400 calories!! That's heck of a lot, I think that is what I eat just for breakfast. good luck on your diet.

Well, heres my advice:

Whats your goal here? Are you trying to cut soda out or what? If you are trying to cut soda out, go with water, it will help your diet 10x more and in a month you will never want to touch a soda again (they really irritate your stomache). If you are trying to simply lose weight without cutting soda out, just cut down on the ammount of regular soda you drink. Ok, basically what I'm getting at is stay away from the diet sodas. You are thinking 'This has to be to good to be true, 0 calories?!'. Well, 90% of the time when you think something is too good to be true you are right. They replace sugars with chemicals which are 200x worse for your body. But then again, anything in moderation won't kill you. So no you won't die from a diet soda every once in awhile, but it really isn't a habbit you need. Just like smoking a cigarette every once in awhile won't kill you, but it really isn't a suggested habbit.

But... if you arn't a big soda fan, why become one?

"They replace sugars with chemicals which are 200x worse for your body."

What do you base this on? I would like a source.

Well my gut reaction of why I said that I guess is because my mom brought me up to never drink diet drinks made with chemicals in them, she would rather have me drinking sugar. But if you want proof I suggest you open up a second web browser and type the following:
1. www.google.com
2. "aspartame" or "is diet soda bad"

I am not a scientist and I cannot say which results you will like and which you won't. People can prove anything is bad for you and yet at the same time others can prove anything is good for you ("smoking 1 cig a day won't kill me but it will help me lose weight!").

The only thing I've ever found regarding any food product and 'proof' is that there is 2 sides to each story. I can find a website that claims there has never been any substantial proof regarding diet sodas and yet 1 second later I can find a site saying diet sodas and aspartame have a massive number of side affects.

Instead of asking for proof, why don't you ask yourself what makes you feel better and what you have to gain. Linux23 stated "i really am not a big soda fan", so what does he have to gain from soda? Now what does he have to lose in the case that any of the chemicals, later on down the road, are proven to be bad for you.

Ohyea, I also don't drink milk at all and very rarely do I eat red meat 🙂. But the red meat choice is only because I really like the taste of fish, chicken, and turkey over red meat. That is just a personal preference.

I know that a google search will provide me with a plethora of infomative sites describing to me the horrors of diet soda. But a similar search will also provide me with convincing evidence of how the moon really is made out of CheezeWiz or the truth about garden gnomes. I was hoping for a more reliable opinion (even if it is on a hardware forum). I personally don't have a problem with sodas, I'll have a diet coke ever now and then and mostly drink water and that's about it. But it's not me i'm worried about. And before I go on some crusade (and it will take a crusade) to give up my gf's addiction of diet coke, I'd like to have some cold hard facts beforehand.

So skace basically you eat vegetables and drink water all day? Must be fun!

I'm sure that there are some problems with aspartame but i'm more likely to trust the FDA over some website published by a guy who was bored one day and decided to try and scare us.

you should also aviod coffee as well, probably more so than soda!

yea right, you can also use artificial sweetner with coffee🙂 jut don't go nutz with cream and stuff and you'll be fine. as for the dangers.. bah, look at who gets cancer. ppl that eat healthy get cancer.. its the luck of the draw.

<<

I don't think it's zero calories, I think it's like 1 calorie or something.. I just don't like the taste of diet soda .figure if I want soda I'll just budget the calories in and have a regular can of pepsi
>>

Whats the difference between diet Pepsi and Pepsi One then? oh wait do they even make Pepsi One anymore?

<<

<< Good water with a twist of lemon or lime is better for you.. it'll help flush toxins out of the body 🙂 >>

trust me, i drink at least 2 gallons of water per day. i was just curious if drinking one can of diet soda with my meal, would it really affect my progress on my diet. (i used to drink seltzer water with lime in it, but they don't stock that here on my job anymore).

the only thing that confuses me is the 0 calories. how is that possible? 😕
>>

There is hardly anything in there in diet soda. The ingridient in greatest quantity is ofcourse carbonated water. Surprising, but the distant second is CITRIC ACID. 3rd=preservative and 4th=sweetener(aspartame).

Look in my useless photo album. You'll see a picture on diet soda. Thats all there is to diet pop when all the water is driven off.

I really don't know how harmful it is. The infos from this link doesn't sound very appealing though.

If that site has the info right, a 12oz can of diet soda contains 213mg of aspartame. Gram to gram, that merely comes to 1/190th the amount of sugar in standard pop.

A can of diet soda floats on water, regular soda sinks.

<< "They replace sugars with chemicals which are 200x worse for your body."
>>

It's actually the opposite. I'm not saying the chemicals are 100% ok for your body, but the copious amounts of sugar will ALWAYS do more damage. I don't think a human would ever consume enough aspartame in their life to do any serious harm.

Aspartame had to pass a lot of medical tests and trials before it was ever approved...it is safe in the portions that we consume. Any propoganda you see on aspartame being the cause for cancer or heart failure will most likely be found on the internet. I don't you will never find anything of the sort in a recognized medical publication or journal of any kind.

There are both side of the story for aspartame, and I don't know what to belive. But, what I belive is that everything is good in moderation. IMHO, excercise & drink as much water as your boddy need & take your vitamin/eat your veggies & you should be on your way to a healthy life.

I planted tree for 5 summers and often drink more than a gallon of water a day due to the physical work & heat. I feel tire and cranky if I don't take my salt & vatimin during the course of the day, with the regular intake of 5~7 litters of water on an average day. I found that it helps me produce an extra 20~30% more trees if I consume a small amount of food (energy cookies) every 1~1.5 hours & drink juice that I spiced with salt at regular interval. The formention method provided me an extra 10~15% more production when compare to taking salt pill & only take vitamin with water. I was able to produced much more trees than the average tree planter while weighing in at 145 lbs @ 5'10, and runing and average of 4~5 miles a day up and down mountain side over slashes with gears/trees that average between 90~140 lbs.

The moral of the story is that excerise & moderation consumtion is the best way to get result.

Well I don't know what to tell you Jazar. I know even if you had cold hard evidence, it would be very hard to change your GFs ways. Caffiene is a mild addiction, you have to WANT to quit it. And when you do quit it, you will have draw backs and cravings. And although you can find sites about how the moon is made out of cheezewiz, there is a difference between a well cited site and a fake one. I'd like to believe This one has some truth to it, but I'm sure someone can prove its all fake? It basically draws similarities between aspartame research and early tabacco research. How funded research comes up with completely different conclusions than independent research, etc. The site is well cited, but I don't know if it will mean anything to you or not.

The only thing I can think of if you really want your GF to quit, is to dare her to try quitting and see if she can, even for a month. If she does then she most likely won't want to go back to it.

Skoorb,
"So skace basically you eat vegetables and drink water all day? Must be fun!"

I just got done saying how I like fish, chicken and turkey. How does that equate to veggies? I've tried hard to include veggies wherever I can in my eating habbits, but the truth is I just don't like them plain so I mainly eat them in sandwhiches. But I also don't equate fun with eating either.

<< Whether I am on a diet or not, I never drink non-diet soda. It just tastes way too syrupy and leaves your mouth with a 'thick' feeling that I can't stand - end up having to go brush my teeth soon afterwards. >>

only brand name Coke leaves that feeling, try switching over to Pepsi (it's not as sweet though 🙁)

<< you should also aviod coffee as well, probably more so than soda!

actually, coffee is acidic and if you drink a few cups per day you are at a VERY high risk of developing ulcers

as for people saying aspartame is not bad for you. it's bad because it dehydrates you. drinking diet coke is just as damaging to your body as if you were drinking water with alcohol in it

sugar will not damage your body, it's the main source of energy you have so if you want a QUICK BOOST of energy you drink a normal Coke, if you want energy for the next 6 hours you eat a steak. no problem
