I'd never played any of the diable series before, so i decided to try the original to see what all the hype was about. I played a total of like 2 hours and i just couldn't make myself keep playing. Wth is the point of this game? All you do is click on the enemies, and occasionally take a heal potion. The spell system is too awkward to even bother using. There's no skill, no story, just keep clicking. I don't understand how so many people found this game fun. Anyone care to enlighten me?

The people who don't like it say it's because it's a "click-fest". And even as one who does like it, I'll admit that it often does get that way. But Diablo is still considered to be one of the best RPG D&D type games to be made, especially taking into account what else was available at the time. ;) Like it or not, Diablo basically set a standard for what a D&D type game could be - which was way better than anything else at the time.

Some companies eventually produced better games - some are still striving to match it.

Edit: As for why it's fun.. honestly, some days(depending on my mood), I like to load it up and do just that - click away to my heart's content. Really. Admittedly, it's a very simple game to play - perhaps that's part of its charm, for me anyway. Nostalgia. :)

It's a fun brainless hack-and-slash that requires zero strategy and almost no tactics, but keeps you playing to see what happens next.

Note that for D&D games networkman is incorrect, SSI's "Gold Box" series of classic Dungeons and Dragons games came out years before Diablo. Diablo was just the first wildly popular RPG-Lite that appealed to a mass audience that didn't want to mess with all the rules and tactics of a real RPG.

Diablo kicked ass, there was no good game in that genre back then. That was also my first mulitplayer game I ever played.

Diablo isn't the worst game every made, but it is NOT, repeat NOT, an RPG. Its an action game. Its good for some mindless romps with your buddies on a weekend, but any more than a couple hours and its boring.

However, Diablo 1 did revitalize the RPG genre, in a way. At the time of its release, the RPG genre was effectively dead. D1 removed everything about the RPG, leaving in only the combat. It was Fallout, BG1/2, and PST that truly showed what an RPG could do and should be. Problem is, because of Diablos high sales, devs are still trying to emulate it, and its choking out the RPG genre again. Lets face it, there are probably hundreds of Diablo clones and wannabes, but the only people who are trying to create true RPGs today are the mod community, Ultima 5 Lazarus and The Titans of Ether. Even the legendary Black Isle is now just a memory. Bioware hasn't turned out a good game since KOTOR1, and that was so short it was barely worth paying 50 bucks for. If this continues, the RPG genre will be dead again in a few short years.

Don't even get me started on Halo.

I love that game, I'll keep it in my archive of games I've loved for the rest of my computer gaming career.

You obviously did not strike up a thorough enough conversation with Gharbad the Weak.

diablo1 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
>>>>>>>>>>>>>> diablo2

the only thing d1 lacked was replayability with only 3 classes, and it needed to be maybe twice the size. everything else - from characters to atmosphere, diablo1 rocked d2 hard

and for the record, i would classify it as action/rpg:p

Diablo is reasonable--a good first effort from a company that had never made a true RPG before.
Diablo 2 is the most overrated game of all time. To give that game anything more than a 6/10 is to reveal yourself to be completely without taste.

Are we talking about Diablo or Diablo 2? Because Diablo 2 had a very complex skill system.

Yeah i'm talking about the original. Never played diablo 2. I guess it's because I didn't play it when it came out, but played it now after i've played rpgs like baldures gate, morrowind, neverwinter nights, etc.. I still can't comprehend what it is about that game that people actually enjoyed though.

Diablo never was really fun until I started playing multiplayer. Then it became EXTREMELY fun. Granted, I had to go through trouble finding legit people, but once I found that niche, then everything made sense. You started searching for the best books, trying to get to 50, and doing laz runs in hell. Heck, hell hell was hard! Only the most experienced can take hell hell alone. Usually you needed a group of four.

Don't look at diablo as a storyline rpg. Look at it as an item farming and exp game. That way, it becomes 100x more enjoyable.

Ironically, I just took up Diablo 1 again after a multiple year absence. Its graphics are dated, but the design and game play are excellent.

Unfortunately there is next no noone playing on Bnet now so I suspect my experiment will end shortly.

Diablo? Nah.

This is the worst game ever made

Hehe, indeed. I remember reading that review when the game was released. It actually made it to No.1 game in Gamespot because I don't think any game had ever gotten such low scores. I was laughing out loud because I couldn't fathom why something like that would ever be released.

I find it funny when people play a popular game and, after not liking it, promtly declare it 'the worst game ever'.

Games like Diablo, Halo, WoW, GTA...even if you don't like them, they are far, very far from being the worst games ever. They are all fairly playable, polished and well made products, whether you like them or not.

The worst game ever would be, by definition, unplayable, unfinished, buggy and truly uninspired. None of the above games come even close to really fulfiling those characteristics.

Take a look at the game Blueweazel linked. Here's an excerpt from the review:

"The basic idea in the actual game is that you pick one from four vaguely different trucks and then one from five vaguely different levels. You then compete against another truck in a simple checkpoint race. That's it. However, Big Rigs can't even get this basic concept right. The supposedly computer-controlled truck you're supposed to be racing against in the game never actually moves. It's right there next to you at the beginning of a race, but it has no purpose in the game. This is to say, actually, that none of the game's races have a purpose because there's no competition and no time limit. You win every single time. So unless you especially like seeing a winning-screen over and over again that reads "You're Winner!", there is absolutely no point in playing Big Rigs.

But let's assume for a moment that the AI trucks actually worked, and you could get a race going. Even if this were the case, the game still wouldn't be worth playing in the slightest. Big Rigs' controls essentially involve hitting the arrow keys of the keyboard in the desired direction and nothing more. The game provides no support for peripheral controllers of any kind, and there isn't even an option to edit the default keyboard controls in any manner. Your truck also handles pretty horribly. There are no physics here. You accelerate much too quickly to even be minutely realistic (especially when going in reverse, which lets you go from around 0 to 60mph in about five seconds, continue accelerating infinitely faster, and stop on a dime the second you let up on the keyboard), you can travel over the most rugged of terrain without any problems (including nearly vertical mountains), and you can turn in ways that cause you to jerk around in some pretty ridiculous manners.

Of course, the controls would only matter if you actually had to worry about running into things or crashing your truck, which, actually, is a nonissue. You see, you can clip your truck right through every object on a race course in Big Rigs, from the biggest of houses and walls, right down to the smallest of lampposts. Furthermore, bridges evidently don't actually exist, despite the fact that you can see them--driving over any of them results in you sinking right through them. It is also quite possible to simply drive right off of the literal end of a level when playing. Considering the fact that you can drive over these tall, seemingly insurmountable mountains (at least, insurmountable for an actual diesel-powered truck), and there are no level boundaries, eventually you can just drive off into literal nothingness and can hang out there as long as you please..."

If you think Diablo even comes close, you have very poor judgement regarding games.

How do you tell the difference? Diablo still has skill attributes, different classes, people to talk to, and items to customize your character. Just because it's watered down compared to Baldur's Gate II doesn't keep it from being an RPG.
