For every ignorant person on the left, there are 100 ignorant, or close minded bigots on the right.

democrats are even dumber for being able to lose at all to bible thumping republicans, ever

the two party system is retarded

left and right and those who define themselves solely as one or the other are retarded

I agree a two party system is stupid. A one party system, that is run by benevolent, educated, and progressive people would be 1000 times better. We should work towards this goal.

What the OP is proposing is still democracy, but voters must pass a test to prove they are educated. This is a bad idea for a number of reasons. It will reduce voter turnout to far lower than the already low turnout we have today, because even a lot of people who could pass it couldn't be bothered. Also, the rich tend to be better educated than the poor, so this will shift the power balance substantially toward the rich. I would say it's highly debatable that the ability to pass a written test really makes you more qualified to be our leader.

The strength of democracy isn't that the average voter is really good at choosing a leader, it's that if a leader does a really poor job, he/she will not get voted in again. Politicians are accountable to EVERYONE, not just those that are deemed smart/rich enough.

Voting should be a privilege, not a right. It should be treated like a driver's license - until you can show competency, you cannot and should not participate.

well, this is the whole point of the electoral college.

...sort of.

and is why "the model democracy on the planet" is not a pure democracy.

This includes a representative democracy. Should every adult have the right to vote?

I see many problems with giving a blank right to vote for so many people.

1. Many people are ignorant, and vote with their ignorance. Look at the tea party, a whole organization of voters that are nothing but ignorant.

2. Many people are of poor education, and vote for things based off this poor education. Just look at all of the creationist who are pushing for creationism in schools.

3. Many people are bigots, and vote with their bigotry. Look at all of these bans on same sex marriage.

Just look at how many seats the republican party won last election, shocking when most republicans in office are not fit to lead.

Personally I think a society run by a council of educated and progressive leaders is the best. These will be highly educated people with progressive ideals and beliefs. They will be elected by the people, and the only people who can vote are those who pass a poll test to determine if they are educated and progressive. Backwards ignorant people should not be allowed to vote.

Note, I don't all tea party people are bad, I am sure most are good people. They are just ignorant, and their voting reflects that.

So people should not be allowed to vote IF:

You don't agree with them.
They are not progressive.
They are ignorant In Your Opinion.
They are Tea Partiers or Repubs.
They are bigots.

Sounds like you shouldn't be allowed to vote either as you are an ignorant bigot from the rant above.

You are ignorant if you think just because you don't agree with someone elses opinion or ideas that they are wrong.

You are a bigot due to the beliefs you expressed above about these people.

Yes.

Over the years I have realised that securing power and money for myself and my family is harder when my subjects are allowed to have a say in what goes on.

Yours faithfully

If the general opinion is that democracy is perfect, it is certainly overrated. Democracy is clearly not perfect. The reasons you point out (although supported in a somewhat non neutral way) are valid. Democracy also fails to allow people to overweight their opinion on issues they are truly experts in. It has many other shortcomings we haven't thought of. But people don't think democracy is perfect. They think it is preferable to other available options. In that sense, you'd be hard pressed to demonstrate it is overrated at all, much less "highly" so. What does that even mean?

In conclusion.. troll less.

I side with Sir Winston:

“It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried.”

Liberty, habeas corpus, respect for minority rights, etc - to me are at least as important as Democracy. But then I was indoctrinated living under the most perfect document in the history of man, the US Constitution.

Democracy in most places is two wolves and a sheep deciding what's for dinner. That sux.

The bottom line is a benevolent dictator sounds great as long as they, he, or she are benevolent towards you. But it sucks if the dictator or panel is against you and this is why the "Founding Fathers" set up this country the way they did.

I recommend you read up on European\British history.

The Constitution was supposed to be the benevolent dictator. All can be changed because we can do anything we want with Amendment process including getting rid of it. But we got rid of it without going through the necessary paperwork instead.

Some people are liberals, and vote with their bleeding heart, not their brain.
