Why is the 710 $600 more expensive than the 410, even though both have the SAME exact parts. Even when adding in a larger screen, faster cpu, and larger hard drive, the total still came out to be $600 cheaper.

What the f**k is going on. I almost recommended my friend to buy a bloated priced system because it was advertised as the "next-generation" Dell gaming system. The only upgrade I can see from previous versions is that additional numbers in the title and the insanely bloated price tag for no reason whatsoever.

Am I missing something here?

I'm not sure if this is the right sub-forum.

Any moderators who feel there is a more appropriate posting section for this thread please move it. : )

It's kind of late and didn't take the time to choose a forum section...

to answer your original question: Dell is in the business of making money, so yes they're screwing you.

Thats not even the case here though, they arent even price-competing with their own product here.

A. Your friend should read some of your threads here, before listening to you. :p
B. They don't use the "SAME exact parts". The 710 is based on an nVidia SLI MB while the 410 uses an Intel based 965 board. And I'm sure the 710 doesn't use a 375W PS like the 410.

Even if what you said is correct, that does not justify a cost difference of over $600 for what is
essentially about $250 worth of higher cost parts ... the mobo might run about $75 more
and the power supply, if bigger / better, maybe another $90 more (at most, if bought retail)

In my view, pick which mobo chipset you feel is best for you and check the power supply ratings.
But on average, Dell power units were always rated at less than what they could put out and should
last 6 years or so (have mine since 2002)

sure they are, the higher priced model has some extra software, to which the average home user can't tell the difference and will pay more..I'd say they're pricing pretty well considering they just want to make money..

The only extra software on the higher priced unit is World of Warcraft
Otherwise they both have the same programs:

McAfee AV 15 month

MS Works (personally I hate MS works ... too limited)
Would prefer to spend once and get the full MS Office Suite

Adobe Reader 7.0 (which is Free anyway and is now up to V8 so they are including obsolete junk)

Yes you are missing the fact that you can shop elsewhere or build you own.

Brain wise, if you forgo the profanity, you might have more cognitive power to find a good solution.

Will the XPS 410 375 watt (is that the wattage? i can't find the psu info on the build) PSU be sufficient for the computer?

My friend has 2,000 for a retail system, and wants to buy it from a reliable shop, so I recommended a dell.

Is the $600-more XPS 710 worth the price?

As a specialist your Job is to pinpoint to your friend the objective technological differences.

It is his call to decide on, personal, social, fasion, and popularity aspects.

Personally, I would Not pay the extra $600 for the XPS 710.

Yeah, I definitely don't want to come off as pushy. If I were spending $2,000 on a gaming PC, I would want to know if my monies were being well spent.

It disgusts me how Dell makes their unweighted pricing without even the slightest bit of discretion.

I'm all for the "award-winning customer support," but come on...

I know there are other retailers online, but let's be serious.

ibuypower, cyberpower, monarch, aeoncraft, etc.. are total s**t.

Their pricing is obviously better, but their customer service and return policies are terrible.

Good to see you read Jack's posts. You seem to have missed this sentence though:

Noobtastic as far as I know there is No law forbidding one from building their own PC.

If one does not want to build he buys what is available.

You got few answers and it might be the time to collect the info and make a decision.

Whining, complaining, bad mouthing, and profanity, is Not going to help anyone, or change Dell price. (It might lead though to the terminations of this thread, or if you want I can move it to forum that is Not of a Technical nature).

I suspect the 710 is more expensive because the case is more expensive. Plus, Dell probably doesn't sell as many of the 710s as they do other systems, so their cost is higher (takes longer to offset design & manufacturing costs, etc.) Just a guess though. Like others said, if you don't think it's worth it, don't buy it. I don't think the 710 is worth it, personally.

Once you get over about the $1000 mark, build your own gets *VERY* attractive.

There are very few worthwhile deals over that price threshold (yes there are exceptions).

As you probably already know, you can build either of those dells for at least $300 less than their listed prices. Even moreso with the XPS (probably closer to $800).

You can't find it, because your Googling skills are woefully lacking.
