Is dehydration the main reason for a hangover?

The impurities in the alcohol are a major factor as well. The clearer the alcohol, the less the impurities.

as i understand it, the water content near your organs especially near your brain is used up when your body purges alchol from your system so when you wake up there is not enough fluids hence dehydration hence headache and body ache. i drink a bottle of evian after i drink, i rarely feel bad in the morning

A hangover has nothing to do with dehydration. It is all based on stupidity.:)

Drink plenty of water or juice today.

The only REAL hangover cure is time. Neverthless, let me share some personal wisdom on this topic.

Before going to bed:
Drink at least 1 glass of water
Leave full glass by bed.
If glass #1 gets you out of bed to pee, drink glass #2.
Take a multi-vitamin
Eat something - even a slice of bread

Next Day
Drink mucho water
Take hot shower
If stomach symptoms exist take a pepcid or Rolaids.
Tylenol/excedrin/advil for headaches.
eat light meals

If you use this as a guide, you will never really be hungover again, unless you go on a SERIOUS bender (or drink RED wine or Champagne)

Dehydration is the biggest factor, but by no means the only factor.

When you are pissing out all that alcohol throughout the night, you are also peeing away lots of water soluble vitamins and minerals. Eat a banana and drink some OJ to help catch up on your vitamin C and potassium.

Alcohol also causes poor sleep so you could also be feeling the effects of a crappy nights sleep.

Alcohol also gets into your blood stream and messes with your blood. If your body hasn't metabolized the alcohol fully you could still have some in your system. You could still feel a little groggy or queezy from that as well.

If your stomach is bothering you, I would go with toast and honey. I always go with that if my stomach is upset after drinking.

I find that when you change drinks it really throws you out. Say you have 5 beers, your feeling pretty cruisy, and then you have a couple of shots or some wine and it's beddy byes time.

triplej - regarding your 100% alcohol comment. From a Laboratory supply vendor, you can get 99.9% alcohol at a reasonable price. Unfortunately, that.1% is some seriously toxic stuff. Your liver would implode immediately. 100% alcohol is available but is exhorbitantly expensive and EXTREMELY dangerous. Grain is an alternative, but considering very good booze is available at a respectable 60-70% alcohol, I wouls stay away.

just my $.02

To add to Rudee's comment about impurities, many cheap wines and cheap liquors have sulfites added to them. They will say on the bottle "contains sulfites". Steer clear of those. Talk about the mother of all hang overs...EEK!

AUMM, I've read from several sources, as well as knowing from personal experience that that sleep while under the influence of alchol is no where as regenerative as sleep when sober.

Your body is still trying to metabolize the alchol so it doesn't full shut down and do the natural repairs that it normally does.

Um, I had three liters of Guiness and 3 Miller High life bottles last night. I don't feel too bad, but like after excessive drinking, I always gotta take a major sh1t in the middle of the night. it's bizarre.

It's all about Bloody Mary's. If you can keep the first one down, the second will take care of all your symptoms. :)

I know how to stop a hangover occuring. Just keep on drinking. The only problem is that after a week the funds are drying up (pun!) and it's hard to work while under the influence. Just this morning I heard a guy was returning home from the pub last night and he was a little intoxicated. So, he pulls over at the plod shop and asks for directions. The cops suspected he was drunk(more like pissed off his face!) and tested him. He had a blood alcohol level of 0.39! The legal limit here in Australia is 0.05.

The only real cure that i know of for a hangover is this: A IV of saline drip, wide open, and an oxygen mask for about 20 minutes. Some of the residents at a hospital I worked at showed me that one.

xraymongral--My roomate's an EMT, and he always threatens to come over one night while he's on duty and give me an IV while I'm passed out. I've never argued...but he's never done it.

"Contained within alcohol products are toxins called cogners that cause the ill effects known as a hangover. These toxins are positively charged molecules that invade the cellular level of your body disrupting the acid/alkaline balance of the body. This imbalance can cause the body to fight back. That fight presents itself as vomiting upset stomach, headache, sweats, chills and more."

My anti-hangover regimen consists of two aspirin, two antacids, and two 16 oz. glasses of water just before bed. Then, in the morning, I eat a nice complete breakfast.

Of course, this all can be avoided if you stick to high quality single malt liquor...
