Is DC Really Dangerous???

I'm going to be interning at the Capital next semester and wanted to know how careful I should be in DC.

I'm a naturally cautious person, so I don't think I'll walk into any obviously bad situations.

For those of you who live there or who go there often: is it as dangerous as people make it out to be? How careful should I be? Is going out alone a total no-no?

Hey Sarah,

DC is no more dangerous than any other large city. Don't go out walking the streets alone at night , go with others. Take cabs.
Be aware of your surroundings, but don't let your hesitation bar you from enjoying yourself.

Anyway, DC is awesome! Lots to see and do. I love it here!

Most of the violence reported in DC when it was earning it's Murder Capital title was gang bangers/drug dealers shooting other gang bangers/drug dealers and innocent bystanders. The vast majority of this activity was occuring in parts of the city you are not likely to visit while doing an internship. Overall DC is a very nice city and I think you will enjoy yourself if you decide to do an internship here.

Crime and murders in DC have absolutely plummeted in the last few years

I've been living down here for about 2 years and really love it

As was said, just be smart when walking around at night, and be careful in the club district!

I concur with jaipai. I interned there a few years ago and loved it. Just project an air of confidence and people shouldn't bother you. My internship supervisor recommended staying out of the norteastern and southeastern sections, but that was the only warning she gave. I doubt you'll have any trouble. It's a great city!

Well Capitol Hill can be mixed... once you move back into east capitol street it is a nice hangout for people who work on the hill and has some clubs, but has some bad parts mixed in. But Georgetown, federal Triangle, a lot of NW is pretty safe, just use caution like you would in any other city, but don't be paranoid. Also the whole 'downtown improvement project' around MCI center and Chinatown is really working out great, they have cleaned it up a lot. Also, take the metro as much as possible! It is great for getting around, and the 'zone' system can sometimes be confusing to people. And yes, I too think we should have a DC ATOT gathering. I think I brought this up a few months ago and someone PM'd me saying it was a good idea, but I never did anything about it. So who of you out there are (a) ATOT DC'ers and (b) if you are, are you willing to meet up somewhere? I?m not sure... ESPN zone, I think it's around Hard Rock Café and FBI building. Any other suggestions??

as others have noted above, dc really is no more dangerous than any other big city. i've been here since '95 and like it a lot. i live in downtown dc (dupont circle for you locals) and i pretty much walk and metro everywhere (not much choice since i don't have a car). if you stick to the beaten path, you should have no problems (even going out alone at night). and these days, capitol hill is about the safest place in the world.

congrats on the internship!

p.s. blueapple - i'm all for a dc-area atot gathering. just let me know when and where. lots of good places to meet.
