Is cussing/cursing/swearing offensive to *you*?

Offensive? No.

Rather, a sign of ignorance when overused.

Howso? I know a lot of people that are very profane, and intentionally try to slip in as many 'cuss words' as possible. I do think *that* is a sign of ignorance. I do not continually cuss (do I? There are a lot of people here that know me... perhaps I do, and don't know it), but my cussing is by no means infrequent, either.

For example, something I said tonight was "How should I know when you're supposed to be 'on deck'? The fvcking announcer keeps messing up!" I cannot think of *any* other word that I could substitute in there. Idiot? No. Dumb? No. Eliminate it altogether? Absolutely not. Disgusting creature that doesn't even deserve to take another breath? Nope, still not strong enough.

Hooray, poll.

The only time I get offended by swearing is when someone does it constantly. A bit of "colorful" language for emphasis is perfectly acceptable.

Why does frequency make a difference? They're just words.

Depends on context. In normal conversation, it doesn't bother me. In anger, hell yes, it sends me right off the deep end. You want to yell at me - fine. Swear at me - okay. Doing both is like waving a red flag at a bull.

What on earth.... why?

Well, that argument is usually taken further, to say that it's never *necessary*, and I suppose it isn't.

I don't understand how a small selection of words makes some people so angry... or for that matter, why it is even classified. I think they're just words. :-\

It grabs my attention (like if someone cusses across the room and i hear ill look over to see whats up), but I don't get to offended unless they are talking about horrible things along with the swearing.

I almost never swear personally

EDIT:

I dont think you understand what the purpose of language is :disgust: Sure, they are just words. Every thing in our language is just a word, or if you will, a symbol to represent something.

the word "Love" for example, isn't anything special, it doesnt look any prettier than any other word... but it represents something beautiful, and special to everyone that looks at it.

Swear words do the same, except they represent something offensive.

(by the way, i stole that analogy of Love/symbol from some book or movie, i just cant remember where right now)

nope. doesnt offend me, neither does hearing it. i like to think i have excellent control though when it comes to family surroundings and such. if its around my moms also, i try and curb it the best i can. and this is coming from a guy who self-admittely curses a lot. i use the term "a lot" loosely also. i thought about it a few days ago and realized i throw curses out even when not necessary.

an example, went to go get burgers with my friend this past weekend: "they called your number first you lucky son of a b*tch? oh sh*t, its probably because you didnt order all that f*ckin' lettuce and tomato and sh*t, i forgot you get the motherf*ckers plain". im dead serious, that is a typical sentence for me. in fact, i probably threw in 3 more curses without even realizing it. oh well, foul mouth, runs in the family. what can i say? sh*t. there, thats what i can say. 😀

Well, necessary was the wrong word. Being aware of your surroundings is more what i meant.

(fvck) interj.
Used to express extreme displeasure.

I don't get how that's offensive. Yes, words are symbols or references to objects. So what? To say that I was extremely displeased with the announcer (using my previous example) would be a massive understatement. I don't understand how it can be offensive. <shrug>

I try not to cuss very much around my adopted parents, just because I know it makes them angry... I don't try to tone it down because I understand, but only because I don't want them to get mad. In a job setting, the only reason I would refrain from swearing would be if it were against company policy, and termination were probable. But those are just excuses to me... they don't define why. heh

Nope, simply because the words have no meaning to me anymore. They're just words that people use. I don't get offended if someone swears out loud.

However, swearing in public near children or elderly is different

It's a sign of a relaxed register, which is hardly professional. I also think it shows someone's class. I have no problem with swearing, and could care less what others do. But I think it says a lot about a person when they over use them, just like people that use the word "like" all the time.

Depends on the situation.

Swearing around kids or during a solemn occasion. Absolutely.

Swearing around a bunch of buddies. Not really.

QFT

Swearing directed towards someone is bad, too. But just swearing at a situation. i.e. "Dang, that sucks" isn't.

waiting for someone to break out the Ebaum's world of the meaning of the word Fvck.

anyways, not offensive here. that mutha fvcking N word is the only sh1t that i find so god dam annoying and any b^st^rd a$$hole or b1tch kunt who says that word really p1sses me off and should go to hell.

No, but in a business setting I do question the speakers judgement (there are circumstances I'll give them, like blowing up a multi-million dollar generator by accident).

The only time it bothers me is when there's families and/or children around, or when someone does it just to say swear words. Then it's just stupid and annoying.
