I remember back in 98 before all the AOL Chatroom Kiddies joined nobody complained about cursing and this forum was much more interesting than it is now.

i don't mind cursing in emails and conversation.

but when you curse on here it's so contrived, i can't stand it.

when you have to go and replace letters and stuff, why not just find another word?

Yes, but it shows the caliber of posters here. Swearing is the language of the uneducated.

BRING IT!!!!
This is preposterous. Some of the most articulate people I know love to curse (I'm at the top of that list by the way :D).

Here's some food for thought:

Do any of you that think cursing is offensive think that saying "aw heck" or "shucks" is offensive? If not, then saying "F___" is no different. Granted, it could have other meanings, but the word used in that context is just a substitute for either of those words. It's not meant any differently.

At work here, men and women use those words in meetings, but the line is drawn short of saying it about anyone. You can say s.o.b., but you can't call someone that. You can say someone f'd something up, but you can't say that you'd like to f someone.

I've been promoted (true promotions, mind you) three times in the last 12 months. I couldn't get there by cursing in meetings all the time. I curse as much or more than most people I know, and yet I'm able to function and grow in society. There is nothing bad about it, inherently, as long as it's used in context.

That's a good point, and I agree with you in most instances.

nah....using a combination of '!!!', '111', and 'oneoneone' makes you cool. But is all seriousness I'd say there is probably less cursing here than what I hear in real life conversations. I'd say it's not to prevalent but I don't think people need to use it as much as they do either.

Yes. I'd like to see a decrease in @!#$@#$. People swear all the time, just because.
As for letter replacement, i.e. v ~= u, it's the thought that counts. I know what you mean, and I don't care if there's a v instead of a u, I still regard the word the same way.

Not in general, no. It's really just a handful of posters that post often and post loudly that make it seem the cursing is "too prevalant." Curse words used sparingly in a post is an easy way to convey anger, annoyance, what-have-you.

The language filters seem to work well enough. They discourage people from getting Sailor syndrome, while still making it easy enough to get your point across if you decide to curse.

wow. two bans in one thread!

That being said, I'm not a huge fan on cursing, but it can be quite useful to stress a point.

I am ambivalent on this one. I am all for free speech, but a profanity-free zone at least gives people some motivation to maintain a civil discourse. It seems to me that if there are going to be rules on it, some posters are getting a free ride by calling others "fvcking kunts," and the like - there are some folks here who are chronic offenders when it comes to that kind of thing, and it does bother me.

Yes
Are there really this many people that think that cursing in here is too prevalent?

I go to lots of other forums where cursing is a way of life. EVERYONE is calling EVERYONE ELSE gay (not that word, but you get the picture) and such. It's ridiculous. There are very few personal attacks here compared to other forums 'round the web.

Ease up people?! Are you really that sensitive?

I don't think it is. I see it being used once in a while to push the point across emphatically. I don't see too many 14 or 15 year olds around here but a couple exist.
