Is College a waste of money and time?

It SUCKS, but it's DEFINITELY not a waste of time OR money.
 
Depends on what you do there. If you spend $30k/year to go party, get drunk every night., and fail your classes, then yes. If you spend $5k/year to go to all your classes, study hard, get your degree and prepare for a job, then, no.

I have spent $25,000 a year and goen to classes and done okay. I am double majoring in Political Science and History with a Concentration in Pre-Law. I took the LSAT and I am goign to Law School so I say it's worth it.
 
its definitely worth it, not only do you prepare for your future, but you get to meet so many new people.
 
ok, i want to make an addon to this question:
Are private colleges a waste of time and money?

I currently go to a highly selective private school in N. Dallas, and I just got accepted to both of the two schools I've applied to so far (University of Texas & Texas A&M). Most of my friends though are applying to private schools...their parents (and mine) can afford it. I don't really want to go where it is cold, and the options of private schools down south are few and far between (those that are better enginnering schools than UT & TAMU, at least). Should I try to go to a private college? I'm used to being in classes of 12-15, but I never really have taken advantage of the private help that I could get (havent really need it, heeh).
 
I don't think private college are really worth it. You can get to any good, public college (depend on your GPA, ACT, etc,etc). More importantly is what you're doing while you're in college.

My opinion on this topic is that College for most students is a waste of time and money. I do not knock education, as I feel that having an education and a degree is important in todays economic climate but.....

1) How many people graduate from college and they cannot find work? Is it because....
a) They screwed around in college and got piss poor grades?
b) They took worthless majors, and there chances of finding work was slim to none?
worthless majors: 1) communications
2) political science
3) literature
4) history
-and so on......

2) We are told time and time again that if you don't attend and graduate from a college you will be working at a fast food restaurant for the rest of your life. This is Bull!!! There are plenty of people that never attended college and they are doing excellent. I don't mean to brag but my dad never finished high school and he makes we'll over 150,000 a year. In fact, at times he'll make $15,000+ in less than 2 weeks of work! Can most college grads do that? Nope!

Also, remember people that college recruiters make a commission off of high school students. So they will say hype up there colleges because it's there job.

3) College grads get pigion holed into thinking that they should make between $40,000 - $60,000 thousand a year and basically don't aim for anything better. College grads have this misconception that as long as I graduate from College a job will be lined up for me and I will make my little $60,000 a year salary. Opps sorry! Doesn't work like that.

4) It's 4-5 years of putting off reality. My biggest gripe with today's college students is that they make excuses. I might ask: "So you do live on your own? Do you work?" There response "No, I attend college" or "how can i afford to live on my own. I go to school." GET A DAMN JOB!!! Stop making excuses for yourself!!!

If it sounds like I'm anti-higher level education, I am not. In fact I am 32 years old and I am a junior at a University. I'm a Special Education major and i decided to attend college at a later age, because I wanted to live a little. Since i have been attending college, I have seen young students that don't belong in college. In my opinion, college is a waste of time for these individuals and if they graduate they will not find work or they will be flipping burgers for a living.

I'm lucky, because my major (special education) is in a desperate need for male teachers and I am allmost guaranteed a job when I graduate. When my fellow students graduate from college in the near future most will learn the harsh realities of today's world.

I don't mean to piss people off, but i just had to vent a little....
 
college is what you make of it, i enjoyed the challenge, i worked hard and its payed off for me, i know my stuff and am willing to learn more quickly and efficently.

you learn crap you don't need to know and then are not prepared for the real world

College should be a 2 year deal with all the crap cut out from it that isn't needed for the job.
 
I agree with everything tecumseh said. And a lot of what Ladies Man said. I think the entire US education system needs a major overhaul. 1) Stop teaching to the lowest common dinominator! It just makes the smart kids bored and lazy and they are the ones the system should be concentrating on the most. 2) Quit repeating the same subjects and information! Who the bloody Hell needs 12 years of English? And the first two years of college were a total, and I mean TOTAL, repeat of everything I did in my four years of high school. I learned absolutely NOTHING new and was bored out of my mind. Higher education my ass.
 
Hey now, communications and polititical science majors can be useful. You just need to combine them with a business or technical minor. It's a great way to get a job as a news writer, TV/Radio "personality", a lobbyist, or as a PR person. PR people are still in demand, believe it or not!

But lit and history are kinda useless, unless you get a PhD and become a lit or history professor. Same thing goes for philosophy or art history majors.

Oh please! Are these jobs in demand? I doubt it. Wouldn't your time be used more effectively if you interned out of high school and made the needed contacts to become a news writer? If you wanted, maybe you can continue your higher education at a later date but I don't think having a bachelors degree in communications is going to be really effective in landing a job. Im my opinion, it's who you know and having good contacts that really matters. Just my opinion

I'm a communications major. I made 50 thousand a year in my first job that I got a year out of college. Too bad I was laid off but that wasn't my fault. I think you should have added Special Ed to your useless majors list.

I have a bachelors in multi media communications. Getting a job is all about who you know. I'm proud of my degree and the hard work it took to get it. It effectively landed me a 50 thou a year entry level position in IT for a major optical fiber producing company.

I'm sorry to hear that you were laid off =( You did what you wanted so College wasn't a waste of time for you. In my opinion, people have this misconception that if you don't attend college than you are a loser. I know a ton of people that have graduated from College within the last 5-7 years and they can not find work. So what do they do? They bartend, wait tables, work dead end jobs and they all have degrees!!!! Some thing is wrong with this picture.

Also, I'm wondering why you believe that Special Education is a useless major... Disabled children need our support!
