My wife and I have lower back pains occassionally from playing sports and working. We went in for X-rays last week and found that our back deviates from the "normal" curvature of the spine. Is it worth going 3days/week for a whole year, at the cost of $4K total for both? What are your experiences?

There's an episode of Penn and Teller's Bullsh!t that talks about how dumb they really are. It's a waste of money

NO it's NOT like a massage....

A massage last about 40-60 minutes give or take.

A session with a "Dr" lasts about 2 minutes.

I've been to both.

Any of you guys calling them a scam.. have you ever been to one?

Obviously not.

However, it is true that you should find a good one.

Wondering, what did they say? My neurologist reccomened me seeing a Chriopractor because I have a pinched nerve in my neck that's causing me to loose feeling in my hand. The alternative is surgery :Q

Yes, I have & they're a scam, but they're generally nice folks & have a holistic approach to health care.

How can you say they're a scam? Did it not work for you or something?

I bet you just didn't have a good one.

It's not a scam as a whole in any way, shape or form. It's an artform. Peoples' bodies are in all kinds of kinks and knots. Sometimes it's a worthwhile and perhaps necessary approach, such as in Chu's case.

I was a naysayer and now I regret I didn't go sooner. It's made a world of diiference for my neck and lower back problems.

Ignore the 17 yr olds here who know absolutely nothing about the matter.

I don't think its a scam, but it sure as hell doesn't deserve to have the preface "Dr." for its practitioners. At least no more so, than shiatsu, and all those types of body manipulation.

I voted stay away. They can do some things well, but they often will have keep you coming long after they've accomplished all they can.

I think what turns most people (including many doctors) away is the small amount of schooling that they have to go through to be chiropractors. Most people I've talked to seem to say that they can do much more harm than good. However, I've never been to one, so I don't know first-hand.

Then again, I don't think I'll ever actually try going to one, either.

A lot of people become "addicted" to chiropractors. Thing is your body gets use to the cracking of bones and at the moment you might feel good, but then in a week or 2 the parts "manipulated" would feel the need to be cracked again. Even though your initial problem went away. Hence the $4k for a year. If you got the money to spare, go for it. If not try some alternatives(back braces or even those icyhot bandages) before going the chiropractic route and have it be your final choice.

Good luck on finding a solution though. Back pains can be so troublesome. :/

Find a good one and go for it.

I have had a pinched sciatic nerve 3 times in my life. Each time I went to the Chiropractor and it has helped each time.

Who interpreted your xrays? Chiropractic "radiologist"? They know squat about reading xrays.

If your xrays were interpreted by a diagnostic radiologist, then it's a different story.

Low back pain is very common. Just ask your family doctor. Getting it from sports and work is about as common as it gets. Just don't overextend yourself. Continue your regular activities and take a short break if needed.

As for chiropractic, most of us in the medical profession tend to frown upon it. For some people, it works. But for most individuals, chiropractic probably does more harm than good.

Just because something doesn't work for you, doesn't mean it's invaluable for the entire population.

After 10+ years of working on cars for a living, my lower back was a disaster. There were more than a couple of days where getting across the room was a complete struggle. I went to general practitioners, orthopedists, back specialists... Had X-rays, anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxors... None of it helped.

I visited a chiropractic/massage therapy clinic for a few months. They tought me so much about stretching (how/when/why), posture, etc. They helped more than I ever thought they would.

I'm going to guess that this poll will hold true to ATOT standards... The majority of people giving the advice have no actual experience with the subject at hand. Why people look towards ATOT for medical advice is beyond me.

if you find a good chiropractor, that is a good luck. if you get a "not-good-enough" one, that is not something "to complain" because, i believe, the number of good people are always lesser than those who claim themselves to be good, in any field any time. but we have to agree that there ARE good chiropractors that have done good jobs and not all of them are scammers. just because all you are easier to get scammed on the internet doesnt mean everyone online is scammer.

Like people have said........... there are good ones & bad ones.

Lucky I have a friend who is a chiro and I see him once a month ($5 a visit). He really help me with a pelvic problem & a wrist/elbow problem that I got from playing ice hockey goalie.

I think 3 sessions a week is kind of much though.

My suggestion is to find a good book on stretching, ithe back problems may come from not stretching enough.

Cheers,
Aquaman

My mom works for a chiropractor... friend of hers for a long time, she babysits for her, and is also a patient. I went a few times, she cracked my back and told me that one of my legs was longer than the other.

It's a temporary "feel good" in most cases. You hear things cracking and popping and you naturally feel more relaxed after being tenderized for 10 minutes.

good ones can make a world of difference. I visited one after a serious car accident and, after about 4 months of treatment, my neck and back pain vanished.

Like anything in this world, there are some good chiro's and some bad ones, I'd try to avoid the ones that say you need to go 3x/week for a year, that sounds fishy to me. Find one you like, one that make you feel comfortable, and seems like they know what they're doing. How do you know if they know what they're doing? Well they definitly won't say you need to go 3x/week for a year after only looking at your x-rays. Definitely ask if they continue to take post-grad classes. Any good doctor should keep up with the current state of medicine, whether they are md's or dc's. Also since your and your wife are so into sports try to find one that specializes in sports medicine.

They'll have letters after their name like ccsp or cscs, or dabco. Those guys do extra training to specialize in sports and physical medicine. Most likely they'll suggest a regimen of adjustment's and then some physical rehab.

You could just go to a pt, but they're not trained to diagnose the problem, although some of them are very good, and know what's going on better than the avg md. If you're going to go the pt route try to find one that has their dpt, doctor of pt.

As for massage, yeah, they feel good, but that's about it. It may relieve the tension and tightness, esp. if you get a deep tissue massage, but couple days or weeks later, you'll feel it again.

Also want to mention that chiro's go through similar education to md's. Normally it's 4 years long for the academics program, they just don't have the residency program like the md's do, although some schools offer it, just not to everyone.

As for the attitude that chiro's tend to do more harm than good, think about all the mistakes that md's make and the consequences of it.

There's a lot of misinformation out there put out by the ama (american medical association), so try to keep an open mind about it.

The Penn and Teller episode on Chiro's, they definitely choose to go after the ones way out in left field, not the main stream chiro. I'd like to see them do one on md's it'd be much more interesting.

Well I guess that's enough ranting for now. Just keep an open mind, and don't listen to anyone who religiously hates chiro's or loves them...ok just the one's that hate them :)

If your wondering why I'm writing all this, yeah I'm a D.C. I'm not practicing at the moment cuz I'm going to school full time for acupuncture, now that's some interesting stuff, 1 billion people can't be wrong. :)
