I want to study with computers, and i had my mind on cdi for a few years now, is it the right choice? Im gonna take the Network and Internet Support Specialist program, and im just wondering if its worth the money? Is CDI well known? Will i be getting a good initial salary? Will they find me a job after i get my diploma? Im 17 years old, wondering what i should do, thanks for all feedback!

I never heard of it, but just from the name it sounded like ITT tech, or Phoenix College, or any of those other "I'm too lazy or stupid to get a real degree" scools.

Yes.

They have the same flashy (

IMHO, you'd be better off going to a community college or university.

My local community college (Conestoga College) has a good reputation for computer-related stuff, so you may wish to look into that.

Why would a community college be better? I have the money and would love to spend it if i can get onto the job market within 2 years... Would i get accepted to a job as easily with a private college degree like CDI as with john abott for example? Thanks guys,

Carl

The big drawback with CDI as opposed to community colleges, is the fact that they are not accredited. If you ever decide to move abroad, a CDI education will be worth very little compared to an accredited degree or diploma. CDI may teach you the skills, but most employers will want a degree or diploma from an accredited school.

Either way, I wish you good luck in your studies. :)

Thanks!

Personally, i'd lean towards the community college. :)

*edit* But that's my opinion... in the end, you have to make the decision.

Define "good" and "well paying". What do you want to do?

good- will be a permanent, stable job
well paying - round 50k a year or so
I want to support computers, want to be a network support specialist kinda, well, anything that has to do with computers...

If im not planning to move anywhere, and i want to start working asap, CDI should do the thing?

Thanks

Carl

Well, if your lifelong ambition is to do desktop support, sure, go to a tech school like that.

In Canada you are better off to go to the Provincial Technical school.
It is cheaper and the diploma is reconized throughout Canada all CDI is going to give is certs, which have merit but not the same clout as the Provincial school.
You will get a better education from the provincial school as well.
Better labs test equip and on and on.

Your job can never be "permanent" in computers if the company is privatly owned.

BTW you suck :p jk

It's always good to have a rounded education.

It gives you something to fall back on should you decide that the computer industry is not what it was cracked up to be.

Could this be an alternative course? Its a hell of a lot less expensive, and it seems like the same course about.. my original course was at this site:

Thanks for any replies,
Carl

I would definitely take the John Abbott course as opposed to the CDI course. Note that the John Abbott course is CEGEP accredited.

Experience counts for a lot in the IT industry, so i'd also pick up a part time job at a local ISP or something of that sort.

You would recommend JAC over CDI because it is CEjEP accredited.. would that be almost like taking the 3 year course?

With 2 years from CDI for a non-accredited degree, you won't get a stable or a 50k/yr job for several years (you have to work your way up).

If you want to start with 50k/yr, you have to go to a 4-year university. There's no shortcut.

Start salaries for comp degrees from places like MIT or Stanford or Rice or Northwestern or what not are just 50 - 60k/yr anyway. That's after putting >100k/yr into a 4 year education.

I would personally lean toward a community college; more likely accredited, and if you decide to go to a 4 year school (i.e. transfer), you can easily do so from a CC.

No, it would still be like taking the certificate program at CDI, but it will be more universally accepted (even in Canada) because of the CEGEP accreditation of the school.
