It does make me wonder if an organisation that protects pedophiles. Will attract pedophiles. Surely it was known within the pedophile community that if you became a catholic priest then you can touch up little boys with impunity.

The church has shown a pattern around the world of trying to ignore the child sex abuse. Which results in the victims having their lives destroyed at a very young age and it also enables further abuse. The German pope before Francis who stepped down due to "health reasons"* was accused of doing just that in Germany.

He kept moving a notorious pedophile priest around the German countryside. The police call those enablers or non-contact pedophiles.

It must be very hard to deal with this as a Catholic. It is now well established that the church will ignore and effectively facilitate the sexual assault of children. As a catholic what can you do? You have to defend pedophiles. The church is asking the Catholic community to pay for Pell's legal fees.

*There are also rumours that benedict only touched up 4892 little boys before being elected pope.
 
Organized religion is protecting pedophiles and its happening in the first world. How fucked up is that? Is that worse than the terroristic theocracies in the middle east? In a lot of ways, I think it is. I think we can certainly agree it's all disgusting and those responsible for both should burn.
 
Is Catholicism worse than Islam? The first thing I do when I ask myself such a question is what does my question assume. Well the first thing I notice is that I am asking if one thing is as bad or worse than something I have already assumed is bad. And then I remind myself, what if my assumption is wrong. What if, for example, neither what I have taken as a given is bad nor the thing I want to compare it too to see if its worse aren't either of them bad or even good. Then I remember that one of the most important things I know, the only thing in fact, is that I don't know anything but used to think I did. My guess is that you may have the same problem as I do even if you may not know it, because that was just one of a shitload of other assumptions you made.

All organized religion is a disease. It's a crutch its users use to beat the shit out of people not them in order to feel better about themselves and superior even to their fellow members. Add to that guilt and fear and ya get the makings for real brain dysfunction that can't even recognize itself behind all the pointing fingers, secrets and far too often depravity. "God" makes them be able to lie to themselves that they are loved by it regardless. So many of them won't even bother to do the work to love themselves because that would require changing themselves. So much easier to ask God for forgiveness and believe you've received it even if you're only pretending to be worthy of it. Or in some religions if you commit heinous crimes in the name of its God you're worthier of its love and its promises.

God is love, not a game of hate and superiority.

The majority of religions are bad.

I think you could say the same thing regarding both. "A small number of bad actors...". They are both horrible in their own way.

Christianity and organized religion aren't the same thing, however, too many people want to lump them into the same basket. Anything that convinces you that salvation can be found outside of the shed blood of Jesus, tells you that forgiveness can be found outside of confessing your sins to him alone or deviates from the bible is religion. Even Jesus banged heads with organized religion and their leaders while he walked the earth.
 
Religion is power manifestations without borders, fluid nations if you will.. Its only bad in the sense that it can relieve you of responsibility of your own morals... Its is like reverse of that saying how can you trust a man that does not believe in a god <-> How can you believe in a man that needs a piece of paper to tell him whats right and whats wrong.
Empathy is fundamentally build into our DNA, it has no religion no color no gender.
Here is the thing with power manifestations, be it government, religion or whatever, it attracts those who craves power to the top, like you see the cesspool of politics, the swamp, the closer to the top you get the more it stinks.. Religion is no different in this sense and it doesnt matter if its Islam or Catholicism or whatever.
We the people should demand that our leaders be submitted to a range of genetic testing to look for psychopath markers before they can take office or put on a robe or be put in charge of any number of regular folk.
 
Christianity has some healthy aspects. Every single one of us know people that go to church - and yet live their life nothing like what the religion claims to idolize. They won't go around stoning people or treating people any differently. It almost seems like they go simply for the social atmosphere. I say this as someone that is atheist-agnostic and find must of it to repulsive.

Islam, on the other hand... well... when nations are polled and 3/4 of the entire population believes that homosexuality is something you should be beheaded for.... I think that may be a INSEE WEENSIE bit more of an issue, no? But keep thinking they are both equally bad, shows your liberal ignorance.

I agree. Unfortunately religious people often take a similar dump on topics pertaining to homosexuality, abortion etc., equating pro-choice to advocacy of murder, or homosexuality to paedophilia.

Having said that, it's rather more relevant when the person who is supposedly the official representative of God on the planet takes a stance towards paedophilia that's anything less than zero tolerance; that person supposedly has a hotline to God, and that's their response to the situation so logically therefore that's God's response to it. Therefore it's potentially problematic to criticise people saying that God likes paedophilia, wouldn't you say?
