Is case modding dying?

That's because too many people were doing it. Originally it was to break away from the pack. With so many doing it, that's becoming the new pack...

I was going to put a window in my case....but it came with one, I was going to put a 120mm fan in the back, but it came with one...I was going to put USB and audio in the front but....

I think functional case mods are cool...I keep it simple and high performance...no lights, no 1990's neon junk, just serious computing. Im kinda glad that the whole "Skittle PC" and "lemme see what weird object i can put components inside" fads are dying off...

I never subscribed to the window fab. It's ridicuous to stare at the guts, mind you very messy guts, of your machine. Also the neon thing is totally beyond me...

Conformists! I will always be unique because I never succombed to the tower craze... I still use desktop cases in my home (now I'm just getting around to modding desktops!).

Ditto. Cooling mods are perhaps the most important, but I also had to mod my case to add a set of HD mounting holes, and I filed down all of the sharp edges on the case too while I was at it. (Codegen 6029 mid-tower ATX model - originally purchased because it was partially tool-less and had a factory-stock blowhole. Other than that, it's just a cheap case with poor design and sharp edges. But it was only $40.)

PS. I am a Street Fighter nut too. Nice nickname. 🙂

I have modded the hell out of my Lian-li PC-V2100B. I like plain cases because they are the most fun.

And side windows have a very good purpose for the masses, because the masses buy cheap stuff that has cheap caps that are prone to leakage.

I like my Antec SLB case alot, best $40 I ever spent: http://members.cox.net/mucker/SLB.htm

It looks a lot less harsh than the photo, just the right amount of lighting for my taste. I like the fact that I can check all of my fans and dust buildup without removing the door. A window is functional if anything....

m 🙂

I added a few fans to my V-2000 Led ones, its cool the color matches the lights of my rheobus, nothing fancy and decided to forgo a window this time.

I think there is modding and then there is u83r m0dd1ng....I saw one guy completely redo his case in a Doom3 theme and it is awesome. I don't have the time nor desire to do that, but it really is sweet to see a 1337 modded case.

Here's a few observations.

The market and technology is "up-in-the-air", with Smithfield just becoming available in March (I think); the SLI craze is now subject to second-thoughts re motherboard choices, because anyone with a little forethought would've realized that companies like Gigabyte and ASUS would simply provide SLI functionality on a single board with dual-GPU's. A few SATA 2 drives are available, but the motherboard choices are limited. So me? I'm waitin'.

But case-modding is not dead for me. If I go with water-cooling in my next build, I'm still gonna duct the motherboard -- a cooling mod. And since "we're waitin'" and watching prices, I still put case purchases at the bottom of my priority list, preferring to get "free" used ATX-full-tower cases and modify them. The older models are sturdy, but the rear-chassis always needs some changes because they do not provide adequate fan-deployment opportunities. They don't have ready-made front-chassis openings for 120mm fans.

I was thinking about putting a window in my MOJO, but it will make things noisier, and then I will have to get some LEDs and cool-cathode-laser-lights in there. It is not at the top of my list, when I now have "cool, quiet, and fast" -- about as fast as any OEM machine you're gonna buy.

And frankly, if I go with water-cooling, it's going to be an evaporative "tower" cooler. The parts await purchase at Home Depot; I just need to iron out some details about how to power the DC fan and fit the shower-nozzle.
