Is Car and Driver in bed with Porsche?

I was just reading (well, trying to anyway) their BMW Z4 3.0 review and they literally wouldn't shut the fvck up about how "brilliant" the Boster is. They must have said it five or six times in the first couple of paragraphs alone. It's disgusting. I'm gonna go find another review to read. Grr. By the way, could someone recommend a good car site? I need to find that 'other review' somewhere :)

Well, the Boxster is an almost perfectly balanced sports car. The Z4 is nice, but it's no Boxster. Also, the Boxster is THE benchmark in the segment...PERIOD. So the accolades are appropriate.

I like Porsche in general, but i can't stand the Bosxter. Something about the way it looks just turns me off. The Z4 is a polar opposite though. I can't think of a time when i was so in love with a car :)

Looks have nothing to do with makes a great sports car (well, they do sort of, but it has nothing to do with the dynamics of the car). The Boxster is just simply a better car...even being 6 years old it still outdoes its competition.

And although looks are subjective, the Banglified Z4 looks like sh!t compared to a Boxster S

How is the Boxster as far as service and gas mileage is concerned?

On an unrelated note, Edmunds.com has a long term review of some 2002 model Ferrari. The dealer tried to cheat with them, the car broke down the very first day they got it, and the car has had numerous problems, from the minor things to even major ones. Yet the editors don't say anything bad about the ferrari. If it was a Honda or a Chevy, they would have had ripped it a new one. But since its a ferrari, can't say anything bad about a ferrari. I don't care how much money I have, if I buy a car, and it breaks the very day I get it, I am throwing it off of a cliff and never ever buying that car again.

Nah don't think so... i think the Boxster really is awesome.

I used to think C&D were being paid by BMW before though...

Drive both and then see why the boxter is superior.

It really isn't even a contest. Then only BMW that can come close is the Z3 M roadster...now THAT was a fun drive.

Love the Boxster. People who claim a Boxster is a real Porsche w/ diapers have never driven a Boxster S. Very very nice cars and fun as hell to drive. I can't think of a Porsche that *isn't* fun to drive really :D

Having a big brother who's the sales manager for an European car dealership has perks!

been only about 3 weeks so far in the box, milage is decent, i do city/highway commute, about 125-150 miles a week, and i fill up on average every 7 days..

service, i'm not sure yet, but it's under warranty :) i think Champion is good about service (they're supposed to be one of the top porsche dealerships in the country). also, after reading up, the oil change isn't too bad if you do it yourself, however the tires and brake pads are a bit expensive..

If you're going to get a Porsche, get a real Porsche like the 911 Turbo. I'm not a fan of the Boxster, while I'd love to have a 911 Turbo.

I'm sure the Boxster is a well rounded car, but it's no 911.

You have to lift the whole car up and take off the automatic convertible tonneau cover to change the oil don't you??

Naaah... might as well go all the way and get a GT2... :D

Would you not consider a 911 Carrera, Carrera 4, or GT3 a "real" Porsche? How about a GT2?

I don't understand why people are so hard on the Boxster. It's about as close to a modern interpretation of the classic 550 Spyder that you can get and that was a REAL Porsche.

The only Porsche that I consider to be worthless as a Porsche is the Cayenne.

Those are all fine cars also. I wouldn't mind having any of them.

There's something about the Boxster that I never liked. It seems every guy with a mid life crisis gets a C5 Vette or a Boxster.

If someone gave me a Boxster, I'd immediately sell it and buy something else. The car itself may be good, but the people who buy them have given the car the reputation as being the "poser" Porsche... they buy it and make sure that everyone knows they have a Boxster... put it in their sig, etc. Typical poser stuff.

No offense, but only in American will you see someone with some nice ass cars (boxster s, mercedes), and not a nice ass house to back em up.

It's the price. That's the snobbish thing about it with people:p

When the Boxster was introduced, it cost roughly $39,500 in base form. And THAT'S where it started. The car was too good and too cheaply priced to be considered a "real" Porsche. If the Boxster cost $60,000 at launch, people would be screwing it up the tailpape while eating a bowl of sour kraut. It was a little low on torque, but could still manage to score 0-60 of around 6.1 seconds which was enough to toast all the other roadsters of the day (Z3, SLK, Miata, etc.) and it's handling was second to none in the class.

Now your looking at about $45,000 for a "decent" Boxster and close to $60,000 for a loaded Boxster S. I think that as the price has gone up, people have warmed up to the Boxster. Funny correlation;)
