At the moment, it's as Aquaman says, 'appointed by the PM to represent the Queen'

But answering the above question, well that is the sticking point to us becoming a republic. RE my first post; there are quite a few possibilities. We had a referendum defeated because of it. That referendum put forward the proposition that the President be appointed by the PM, who had been selected by a group of individuals. I can't remember the specifics, it was a few years ago now.

We'd like to get rid of the queen because we want to truly stand on our own two feet. Symbolic reason mainly.
