Yea, get one, she'll love it. We have a Comcast DVR, and previously had a ReplayTV. Just make sure it doesn't stop recording with 1 minute left on the Gilmore Girls season finale, because she'll probably blame you and then be all pissed at you the rest of the night like you made the frigging show run long.....Not that I speak from experience or anything.........

So what's it good for besides pausing live TV and setting up recording schedules? Still see no need for it for our simplistic setup.

The pausing live TV thing never made sense to me, either. If you pause it, and come back later, then it's no longer live, and the rest of the world watching it is ahead of you.

Once you have one, you'll understand. I like TV, but I'm no longer a slave to schedules. I just record things, and watch them when I want. If there is something I hear about on TV, want to watch it, but I won't be home, I just record and watch later. Also, with the space I have, I've recorded stuff I never would have taken the time to watch, and ended up liking it.

Also, I can skip right through the commercials, basically condensing a 30 minute show to 20 minutes. Also, the pause feature is awesome. Someone calls during your show? No problem. Want to go grab some food during that Stargate? Don't worry about it. It rules. Who cares if the rest of the world is watching ahead of you, it's not a race.

Just seems weird that it's no longer actually live.

Oh well, not an issue for me, I'm off to college in the fall where there IS no cable! TV will not exist in my life.

it's sad to see so many people obsessed with television that they have to record it to watch later

I hear DirecTiVo is great and very similar. But, I think the OP said he had comcast and not DTV.

You're right. I forgot all about the fact that I can now record two shows at once. Woohoo. The Comcast guy showed me some trick that allows me to record two shows and watch another but I'm having trouble remembering how he did it. Any idea?

I don't think you can record two shows and watch a third live one. But you can record two and watch a third recorded one. Well, if you split the cable before it goes into the box, and then plug that right into the TV, you could do this by switching the input on the TV, but you wouldn't get the digital channels.

My fiancee blamed me when my mythtv box missed the last minute as well. Atleast I wasn't the only one :). Thank goodness for the internet, she'll be able to watch the ending tonight.

LOL, glad I'm not alone. Luckily we found about 10 minutes later that the show was still in buffer. Apparently as long as you don't change channels, the Comcast DVR buffers like 15 or so minutes of a channel. So even though the record cut off, the show was in buffer. Whew!!!!!!!!

DirecTV TiVo's are way better than regular TiVo units (2 tuners, dolby digital recording and output)...

I have both kinds, 2 DirecTV TiVo's and a standalone. I don't enjoy my standalone tivo as much as the DirecTV TiVo's... (well especially because both of them are hacked)

They are something you definitely need now days with all the crap to watch on tv and the little amounts of time that can be allotted toward them...

Actually it's much the opposite. When we watch TV we want to watch something worth watching. With the DVR setups (we have Tivo and DTV DVR) we can pick what we'd like, and then IF we feel like watching it, we do. For example, we like Jeopardy (7:30pm here) never around to watch it when it airs. And several british (BBC/PBS) show we like are the same way. DVR lets us enjoy the shows we like without being a slave to TV.

TiVo is cheaper and easier than building your own box, and it will work a lot smoother. The only reason I would build my own PVR is if I wanted to do some serious TV archiving. The system that TiVo has set up to allow you to download and burn TV to DVD is still a little clunky in my humble opinion.

The only other reason I would do a home-build box is if you already have the spare computer to do it with and all you would need to buy would be the video capture card and possibly software (unless you are really good with Linux).

Just a heads-up :

If you're a TiVo owner, check your email. I just got an invitation from them to complete a survey in exchange they will send me a $5 Best Buy gift card. Only took a few minutes but you do have to get the email invitation to participate.

Sheesh, my Tivo must've heard me talking about it behind its back in this thread. Now it's acting like it's not activated (it is, lifetime) and I can't use any features. I'm on the phone with Tivo now. Friendly support at least...plus this is the first problem we've had with it in the 2+ years we've owned it.

If you have Comcast and HD programming, get the Comcast box. TiVo (without paying HUGE $$) nor Replay can compete with the Comcast box with HD programming.

People bitch about Tivo and other devices not having the features DVR boxes from cableco's have, but it's the cablecos' fault for dragging their feet or outright denying the companies to implement said features. I wouldn't give my cableco on cent more than my service requires. Deliver the pipe/content to my door, then back off.

Well Comcast is supposidly going to get the Tivo software on their DVR's at some point in the future. Just a FYI.

I couldn't agree more. I know you (the OP) said that you don't have DirecTV, but why not? It offers so much more than Comcast as usually a lower price. (Plus, TiVo is only $5/month.)

Watching TV is a fine way to relax and spend time with your wife/girlfriend. And as labgeek pointed, it's an incredibly more efficient way to watch TV.

Except that he didn't mention how easy it is to skip commercials. I can't remember the last time I watched a commercial. :)
