went to the one in '01...it was interesting. I was sober the whole time, which may have been why I was blown away by the whole thing. It's not really anything you can truly describe, you have to experience it. The nicest thing about it was how cool everyone was. Eveyrone was there to have a good time. THe only negative would be the touristy type folks that would come in with video cameras, they would just walk around going "oh that's weird, get it on tape!" and never really get involved in the action. I admit I brought my camera with me for the first day, but it just got in the way after that. It's an experience. I'm glad I went once, but I don't think I'll ever go again.

Oh, and I'm not gay. There were definitely some gay "areas", but it's not a big deal. I suppose you would need to be secure in your sexuality, only because of the naked folk cavorting about. after the first day, it becomes normal. like a nude beach

I went in 2000. I was worried a bit about the gay thing as well, but it turned out to be a very wide cross section of people from all over the world.

It was the craziest party you can imagine. 30,000 people for a week just partying their asses off. You could hardly tell the difference between sunrise and sunset, it was like people were just going around the clock. There were all kinds of wild ass vehicles driving around too. There was a giant bus made to look like an old sailing ship. It had a deck on top that had a huge mast on top with sails, and a spiral staircase down to the interior which held a dancefloor and a bar passing out free drinks. It just drove around for the whole time like that. Bars on wheels were pretty common. People make all kinds of funky art and weird stuff. pretty much an assualt of the senses. You just never knew what you were gonna see next.

Hit burningman.com and see the link to photos. There are thousands of pics there that can say it better than I can.

Lastly, I just wanna say that I have never seen so many tasty titties in my life! That alone was worth the trip. Without a doubt the coolest trip I have ever taken. Just picture a combination of Mardis Grah, Carnival, Halloween and the moon! I'll post some video clips if I can find them....

It's a party/drug/hippiefest,but get this.

1) You have to pay like a $300 registration fee (I don't know the exact amount)
2) You have to provide ALL your own food and shelter
3) You have to put up with sometimes extreme desert weather.

Basically, a bunch of hippies-turned-capitalists said, "Hey! Let's throw a bunch of hippies in the middle of the desert, give them nothing, and charge them for the 'experience'!"

Not saying anything about Gay people.. I just have always wondered. Every time someone tells me they are going to burningman I just assume they are gay (which is fine) I just dont know exactly what it is.

I have never seen it described as a "gay fest".

It started out when a guy was dumped by his gf, so he and his pals apparently drank some beers and burned the new bf in effigy. I don't see anything gay about that, nor does it bother me if it's become a huge party with little relationship to the first event, whether that means gay, hippy or whatever.

To me it's just a party in the desert. It looks cool and I tried to get out there a time or two. It's become so big though, that now they have to wrestle with environmentalists and so on just to authorize it *sigh*
