Not any more than a cell phone, or the drive-thru, or air conditioning, or your TV, or almost everything else we spend our money on.
 
Nope, not anymore when you can have it for ~$27. The lower the price, the more excruciating it is to try and do tech support for it. I'm glad that I am only there on weekends now (for SBC) and supporting digital cameras where most people calling have some kind of a clue...
 
I have mediacom at my apartment (3 mbps) which is totally awesome... at home it's only 256kb down/up 🙁 (Damn mvtvwireless)

but I do have 2 technics 1200 turntables cause they still kick a$$!
 
Yes it is for most people, some people depend on it to make a living, for those it is not.

I wouldn't want to be without it though.

It it an absolute, no questions asked necessity for my job.

Which is why I clarified for home users. For *most* businesses, a broadband connection is a necessity at some level of their business operations.
