Betamax, VHS, and laserdisc are dead. CDs and DVDs however are quite alive. Did DVDs replace CD's despite being practically as cheap to produce nowadays? nope...

blu ray won't be dead for a LOOOOOOOOONGGGGGGG time. And those HVDs sound quite expensive

I think Blu-Ray may turn in to the next CD. I hope it does. 1080P is great and I don't think I would notice a difference between it and something much much higher resolution (something we would see on HVD). I imagine this is why Sony was so hellbent on getting Blu-Ray to win-- 3 hours of 1080P video highest quality (HD-DVD couldn't do this); we'll have little reason to upgrade again, just like how we are with CD.

HVD may come to computers; don't see a reason for movies though.

Heck. I'm still waiting for the dust to settle on the VHS vs. BetaMax fight, before I make a final decision on which to buy.
