is bit torrent a resource hog?

I'm using the bittornado bt client trying to download a 4 gb file. because the speeds are so slow (10k) it is going to take upwards of a couple days. i'm about 1gb into it, and my computer seems very unresponsive and if i hit up task manager it's taking up 30mb of memory. is this normal?

I'd say that's normal. You want resource hog ? Try java/Azureus. That puts my javaw.exe up at 90MB RAM used. Load up Firefox (like I have now) and that's another 90MB RAM. Your machine can slow to a crawl if you even try to do any file management that involves the harddrive spinning.

1)Dude understand that people are just gonna flame you for qustions regarding stealing moviies.
2) wrong forum
3) 30 mb is not alot

My javaw is at 48MB right now. Firefox is at 95MB. System is running smooth.

I never have stability issues with Azuerus.

It's weird cause when I (and a lot of other people) run azureus for more than a few days, javaw can end up taking about 500 MB of ram. I stopped using azureus because of it, but have since gone back and just restarted it every few hours.

Yeah but how many files are queued/running ?

Anyway, it doesn't become unstable, everything else becomes delayed in responding because of the hog.

anyone have a problem playing xbox live when downloading torrents?

My guess is yes, since you are likely using a router, & teh .torrents are sucking up all your ul/dl bandwidth, which means your online gaming will suck.

Yup, I think the javaw.exe is actually leaking memory.. or taskman doesnt report it properly, taskman says the process never really goes above 50megs or so, but the performance tab may say I only have 10-15megs free.. Once I shutdown azureus, that display will say I have 300+megs free.

netlimiter can limit by application for your PC. So the rest of the bandwidth can go to your XBL line.

Yeah, or with most good clients (aka Azureus), you can limit the upload that is going out.
