Is BF3 gonna be our only hope to use our high end cards in the future?

can it do everything chrome/firefox/opera can do with extensions?

1. Not everyone uses extensions.
2. I use Chrome, IE and Firefox. Lately I have been using firefox less and less since it's not as stable and is far too slow compared to the other 2 browsers.
3. If you do use extensions, certainly there is an appeal to FF.

🙄 What a lame outdated post. They were using the old version of Firefox. Welcome to April 2011, where here in the present we are using Firefox 4.

He said "Who uses IE anyway?"

57% of users seem to think IE is good enough. To say that no one uses IE is a ridiculous statement he made. I am saying there are plenty of reasons to move on from Windows XP. If not for the browser, then features such as being able to use 4GBs of Ram, etc.

With the new generation consoles coming up in a few years that also means they need to develop better engines as soon as possible and there is no reason they can't release the games to PC while they wait for the consoles to come out.

That's a good point. Frostbite 2.0 is being made to scale with the next generation of consoles too. I am glad to see not everyone gave up on pushing the envelope on the PC. BF3 is going to be multiplayer game of the year!

Sony have previously released a new console every 6 years but with a 10 year life cycle meaning they support the previous console 4 years into the lifetime of the new one. If they continue to follow this cycle we should have a PS4 some time in 2012, assuming the world doesn't end.

yeah, good luck trying to get good performance out of XP with the fastest video card setups

2 x 2GB 6950s in crossfire will consume XP's 32bit 4GB memory limit alone.

its 2011 and you're still living its 2006 and Vista just released when there was a legitimate argument against upgrade the OS for game performance reasons

Each to their own, BTW I own windows 7 and windows xp so it's not as if I just use windows xp.

2014-2015 is the more likely scenario based on current rumours.

he put it in a bad way "no one uses IE" but you have to admit that its use has been dropping over time as more and more become aware of firefox and chrome (annoying me as an opera user a tad).

anyway, more competition is always good although it will take a lot more than a few little improvements over other browsers to lure those that have left to using IE. it can't be equal, it can't be a little bit better. it would have to be a lot better to make the swap worthwhile

Considering most games these days ship exclusively with a 32bit executable--such as Crysis 2, it's not like VRAM is the leading cause of performance issues in Windows XP.

See what happens when multinational corporations get control of gaming? No innovation. They have control of the industry and would rather release the same thing year after year since it is easy on the bottom line. I think MS/Sony are in collusion together to keep things the way they are. If car makers can come out with new models every year surely having a new console every 5 years is doable. They don't have to push the envelope either. If Xbox went to a quad core at 3.6 and a 5850 equivalent with 2GB of RAM it wouldn't cost so much. If it were fully backwards compatible it would be a major success. They could also update the anti-piracy measures at the same time.

I really do wish another player would enter the market or PC gaming would become more viable again.

With cars though the competition is so fierce, if you don't update your model often, the consumer will go out and buy another competitor. With consoles, you don't have as many choices. Since the PS3 and Xbox360 are still selling well, Microsoft and Sony probably want to milk them as long as possible before investing more $ into the development of newer generation of hardware. Can you imagine how much better BF3 could have been if it was developed for PS4 around a GTX580 GPU? 😉

History shows how much engineering/testing/ forethought needs to go in to a console design and core components. Both (ms and sony) lost money on the core components/consoles for years. They need to be well in to a node process so there is availability and lower costs.
1/3 of the 'first' 360's became defective, mainly due to heat/power/cooling issues. The smaller the process and dies of the gpu/cpu will exponentially pay off in profits.
I'm guessing lst or 2nd quarter of 2014 and demand for that Christmas will outstrip supply .

Exactly why I want another competitor/PC to do well. If they are waiting until 2014 that is really ridiculous and points to the need for competition even more. Is GTA5 really going to be on the 360/PS3? When the 360/PS3 came out they were powerful but think in 2014 when phones will offer almost the same amount of processing power. The next PSP will for sure surpass them. Maybe MS will move to a portable gaming solution that can be plugged in to the TV at that time.

There is not a need for all of this for a new console. Use existing technology and keep power consumption under 175 watts. Make it backwards compatible. MS is losing money since their anti-piracy measures were defeated. That is an opportunity to beef it up. The 360 could still be offered for sale for a few years. The PS2 was still getting new games until recently. The 360 will be under $100 if it gets another die shrink. Profit per sale is drying up. It is an opportunity to beat Sony to the next gen by a significant margin and at lower costs than the 360 launch.

But anyway on topic....high end cards will be used for 30" monitors, supersampling,3D,surround. There won't be a need for anything else. Eventually a new card will be needed for regular games if/when consoles push the graphics barrier again. I don't know how many of us will still care by that time though. lol

You guys need to relax. Console sales are going to slow down as they already are and devs will focus more on the PC as its sales rise. We are already seeing it with games getting PC exclusive stuff. Dragon Age 2 was the 1st. EA in general are heading that way. Codies always push the graphics Dirt 3 and OFP3 are going to look great.

Sony and MS always say this to keep there current consoles selling strong. It looks like Wii2 will be a 2012 console I expect MS to launch in either 2012 or 2013 to compete with that and that will then force Sony's hand. Also even though Sony may say there 10 year life cycles there always replaced in 7 years or faster.

If there's a new 360 in 2013 like I suspect it will be the longest lifespan for a console at 8 years for the last three generations.

I hope so!

You gotta give the consoles credit. Given their crap hardware, some of the games look amazing.

i.e. Metal Gear Solid on the PS3 looks spectacular.

I think almost every FPS gamer on the PC is looking forward to BF3.. hopefully it turns out good and meets expectations.

Will Nintendo actually get to release any good games though? I know they have Black Ops(is it any good on Wii??) but they don't have BC2 or much else of that nature, right?

You say "good games" but then you list FPS games, which are arguably better on a PC. "Good games" for consoles would logically be genres where they excel, perhaps side-scrollers, fighting games, racing games, or whatever. Really quite a lot of "good games" to choose from for consoles before you'd ever get far enough down the list to mention FPS games. Not to mention we're talking about the Wii here, which is the least relevant console for FPS games which are generally the most hardware-intensive genre.

Well, you're right of course, but since PC game developers hold back FPS development for consoles, that's why I'm wondering. I know that it's more complicated than that due to FPS being low on the console totem pole, yet PC developers are holding back FPS development because of it. e.g.,like DICE is pulling punches on BF3 in order to develop it for PC and console at the same time. They may never declassify information on what kind of cuts were made to the PC version as a result of developing for 3 platforms.

I'm surprised no one is talking about Rage which appears to be sticking to a strictly DirectX 9 based engine ala Crysis 2.

Apparently all of the improvements in the iD Tech 5 engine don't require either DirectX 10 or 11 which would have prevented those features from being in the PS3 and XBOX 360 versions.

It will be real interesting to compare the XBOX 360, PS3 and PC versions of Rage at 1080P FullHD.

In theory there should be no difference between the 3.

Rage is openGL so I'm not sure you can compare it to CE3 in DX9

I Hope my new system can play it ok as i know my wife will not allow me to upgrade again. My 1 gig card may not be enough, but as i don't really use AA or high levels of AF much I might be fine.
