I went to Best Buy on lunch today and noticed that they were offering for $10 The Passion of Christ DVD, two 20 oz Cokes and 8 month subscription to your choice of 3 different magazines, without signing up for the ?deal? the DVD was ~$15 on its own.

Is it me or is it morally wrong in some sense to use a religious based movie to promote items for their own gain?

Discuss...

BTW I?m not a religious person in any sense, I was raised with Christian beliefs but do not practice it at all now days.

W00t! my first poll!!

Edit: Incase there is any wonder I'm being veeeeery sarcastic about the posted question.

Is this a parody thread? I only ask because it certainly doesnt make any sense on it's own.

I still haven't seen it. Is it really as good as some say? I'm an agnostic and curious to see if the movie has any impact.

If it's wrong to use a religious based movie for profit, then making and selling religion based movies in general is wrong, as DVDs and movie tickets are sold for profit.

Mel Gibson made a religious-based movie for his own personal gain.
Newmarket Film Group distributed the movie for their own financial gain.

I don't understand the moral argument. It's a movie, and a very popular one at that. Does using it in sales and promotions somehow diminish or invalidate its religious message/significance?

The nerve of those folks. Putting a religous product on sale is just wrong! No religous products should ever be sold at a discount or clearance.

My view is "Who Gives a sh!t?" but thought it was funny on top of all the tons of people there buying it and all the other "Jesus" movies and DVD's they were pushing also, just found it laughable to see them use the release of that DVD to try and push so many other products of theirs. Again, I'm not very religious, so forgive me if you find this offensive or insensitive in any way.

To add to it, Best Buy also had a huge display of flash lights and batteries with a sign reading "will you be prepared if Francis hits?" in reference to the threat of the hurricane heading its way to South East FL.

Yeah, I thought it was funny that their Sunday ad circular had a bunch of religious-themed DVDs highlighted (and on sale in their 3 for $30 deal). Jesus Christ Superstar, Greatest Story Ever Told, etc.
For some reason, they didn't have The Last Temptation Of Christ or Dogma. ;)

Stay away from that magazine deal... They claim you get XX free issues and then automatically charge your card for a subscription. I was skeptical of the offer and had to ask before they told me that...kinda shady.

It got me laughing that they had right next to The Passion of Christ" DVD the South Park "The Passion of The Jew" DVD. What a great placement!

Heh, yeah. I imagine that they might think that people would buy both, but I doubt that would actually happen all that much.

All he needed was PR
A million box of buisness cards
Careful image consultation
Securing reputation

A clever market plan
He didn't understand
That's all it really takes
He coulda played for higher stakes

Now

Somehow
We've gone wrong

Chorus:
This Jesus thing, it's a smash hit
it's packaged right
All stocks have split, it's a smash hit
It's gone worldwide

Join his name to any cause
Drop his name to get applause
They never get enough
Nothing here to be ashamed of

Those ever loyal fans
They wanan get their hands
On His newest merchandising
Ignoring overpricing

Now
Oh Wow
We've gone wrong

Repeat Chorus

It has no explanation
It smells like exploitation

:D
