I'd want to punch that store owners son square in the nose.
Even better, it seems like the local police were in on turning a blind eye to the slavery and in some cases even abetting it:
Although 50 island farm owners and regional job brokers were indicted, no local police or officials have faced punishment — and national police say none will, despite multiple interviews showing some knew about the slaves and even stopped escape attempts.
Why the national authorities aren't cracking down on the locals is beyond me. And so many in the article rationalizing their behavior away....
And the lack of meaningful punishment... jeez.
In the Long Island slave case a few years ago, the wife got 11 years for her part (which included torturing them) in enslaving some household servants, while her husband got 3.5 years.
