Is being nocturnal bad for my health?

I go to sleep when the sun rises and wake up late into the day. Usually fall asleep at 7:30 and wake up at 3:30, so i do get the recommended 8 hours of sleep every night. Even sleep an extra hour or two on the weekends. The only difference is that i sleep during daytime, not nighttime like most people. So what i'd like to know is if this schedule is bad for my health? Even though i have regular sleeping hours and get lots of sleep, is being awake at night damaging to me?

dunno if ther is scientific proof either way...

as long as you feel awake and are not always tired then u should be fine

Lately i have been sleeping too much and when i do that i never really wake up...that sucks...i know a lot of people would hate to hear someone say this, but i need to get less sleep =)

i don't see how it matters. consider peeps in russia, alaska, and canada who only get 3-4hrs of sunlight.

How, i lived in Russia for 12 years, in Canada for 6. So up yours! 😀

Poca, are you saying that i need more exercise because of this lifestyle?

i heard something recently about 8 hours of sleep being 'bad' for you and that 6 hours was more recommended.. heh.

i guess i should stop sleeping 14 hours a day......

and the only bad thing about being nocturnal that ive found is everybody complaining about it 😛

Been doing the same hours for 18 years and the only problem seemto be that
NO ONE remembers that I sleep it. Not family , not friends. Still Healthy!!!!

well, I heard once that it was always best to sleep at night because at night your body is more in-tune to sleep or something. Don't remember where I heard this from.

You should make sure you get a little sun. You need the vitamin D...being a vampire isn't THAT entirely healthy...😉

Yes - it is bad for your health. There have been studies showing people who are awake during the day have more health problems and don't live as long (sorry, don't mean to scare you). I can't remember the details, but I believe it has something to do with cortizone/melatonin levels.

<< What is this "sleep" you speak of? >>

LOL!!!......I work nights..5:00pm to 3:30AM...and it sucks. Harmfull though, I dunno. I do take melatonin to help keep me on a regular sleep schedule🙂

You should try to get a little sun routinely, even if it means buying one of those home UV lamps (just don't burn yourself, start reasonably). Also take some vitamins and get some exercise. Other than the higher risk of depression, I know of no other reason why being a night owl should be bad for you, other than if you are a night owl, and you are always trying to be awake when you don't feel awake, and trying to sleep when you don't feel like sleeping. IOW, listen to your body.

I have been a night owl since high school, since puberty really. I just never 'feel' quite human during daylight hours, especially morning daylight hours. No matter what I do, go to bed at 10pm every night, nothing, I just never feel 'right' in the day. Whenever I have tried to hold down a morning-day schedule, I am always feeling sluggish, and I am far more likely to nod off at work, school, while driving, etc.

I do far better in the evening day hours and at night, and after a number of failed attempts to hold a day schedule, I've just found it foolish to try.

Just like with that other study that showed people who slept less lived longer, correlation != cause

Perhaps that has something to do with the fact that people who are asleep during the day come into contact with contagious diseases less? I mean, someone who works the graveyard shift downtown comes into contact with FAR less people in an average day, no?

I just started a new job working swing weds.-friday 4pm to 1 a.m. I work Sat and Sunday days, 10 a.m. to 7. Swing coincides with my natural hours better. I normally wake up between noon and 3 p.m go to bed between 3 a.m. and 6. Those were the type of hours I kep when I was jobless for around 6 months. I just feel more comfortable functioning at that time. I can't function before 10 a.m. I am sleepy and not fully cognizant. I have no idea how I made it in HS being in class at 7:45.

Working my new shift, I have realized that I need 9 hours of sleep a night to function properly. I don't get as much sun as I would like, but I do try and get out and do stuff before work, so that I am in the sun for at least a few minutes, and not seeing the sun for the first time at 3:30 when I leave for work. I don't get 9 hours of sleep for my weekend shifts, which isn't that bad because I am completely well rested during the week.

Huh? So you're saying that sleeping during the day causes health problems and quoting studies that show the exact opposite?

I gotta get onto a regular schedule. I keep hour like the ones you mention, but have been getting up before noon lately. Alternate side of the street parking forces me to. Sometimes I crash after moving the car, or catch a nap during Judge Judy. Gosh I gotta get a job too!

going to sleep late and waking up early isnt' helping me in school..
even on days when i have late classes, i still sleep late
its catching up to me..getting ssssoooo tired during classes...
