Band is for nerds, but it's generally for the "cool nerds." I wouldn't mind, but I would steer them away from anything with marching. In high school the pain is just inconvenient, but I've known several people that have really screwed up some joints because of bad habits marching forced on them.

Interesting. I marched for 8 years in high school and college and never thought it was painful. Tiring at times in the summer heat, but not painful. What about ROTC or joining the military? They march a good bit also.

That being said make sure you have your children take private lessons should they decide to choose to go into band.

Only if they want to be the best and maybe get a scholarship with it. If they are OK with just learning how to read music and playing an instrument, they don't need private lessons. I never took any and most of the people I know didn't take any. But if you were 1st chair chances were you took lessons.

A policy for my kids (when I have them) will be to always do something musical and something physical/sporty each year.

It can be playing soccer and joining the band
It can be doing gymnastics and learning piano
It can be dancing lessons and singing

The physical activity is to keep the body in shape, and the music is to train the mind.

Also, being called a nerd is a badge of honour I think.

I was first chair :awe:, I took lessons from the retired trumpet soloist of the coast guard band. Not taking lessons right now but still playing in a band just for fun.
