Is "band is for nerds" still a thing?

I know when I was in school(80's-90's) band was for nerds. One of my kids mention wanting to sign up for band next year and I cringed but I will back them on whatever they show interest in.

Does band still have they nerd image?

I loved band but absolutely hated marching band. And yea..don't let him pick flute. It's only like kicking him when he's down.

Band is good for someone who has an interest in music...considering nerds and geeks aren't looked down upon nearly as much these days as they were when I was in school, it can't possibly be that bad.

Really, who gives a fuck as long as they enjoy it? My kids do some things I used to make fun of others doing back in high school, but then I realize I was just an immature prick back then. When I was in school band was considered easy credit for future business and marketing majors. Kids who couldn't hack calculus, advanced writing, foreign language, and science classes took band.

I never thought it was. When i went to school we had a few "cool" kids that were in band. one was even prom king.

I am happy my kids school offers band starting in 2nd grade.

It all come down to the band leader. My high school when I went was band for nerds. The teacher was the nerdiest guy ever. About 10 years later they got some young dude that let guitar/bass players in the marching band. I was like WTF is this shit then they started playing nirvana. It was the coolest thing I ever saw from a marching band.

If the school's band sucks, then yes it is considered nerdy.

If the school's band is undeniably awesome, then no, people will legitimately appreciate the performances and talent.

Band is for "nerds" but "nerds" seems to have positive connotations as "people who are really good at and/or into something" now.

At least from the admittedly limited interactions I have with upper middle class white kids whose parents are probably bigger nerds than me.

In this rich white area we actually had a fair number of "cool" kids in band at my school, though most of the richer kids were in orchestra (strings are best after all).

Not saying to discourage your kid to do it, it's up to the kid in the long run.

Hell I actually considered it since one of my friends went into band in 7th grade, but my older brother talked me out of it saying that only nerds/dorks are in band. Had to take an arts so I joined the choir 7th and 8th grade (Couldn't draw, hated speech/acting...this was the only choice. Didn't require any at home practice and was the easiest class ever).

At that age all I cared about were girls and figured I'd attract more attractive girls playing bass/guitar in a band rather than being in the school band. I was correct, cute girls at that age tended to gravitate towards guitars more so than tromboners. :biggrin:
