Is Auto-leveling cheating?

Last night I set FF XII to auto-level and my girlfriend says that it cheating.

I say I am using the game mechanics to my advantage.

In FFXII I'd say no. It's easy to beat the game without it, but some of the content requires you to be at stupidly high levels. XP grinding in an offline game is a waste of time.

I see what you did there.

Grinding sucks, period. Call it cheating if you want but I will never fault someone for figuring out a way to get around the process.

I still play the grindfest that is FFXI...

Call it rationalization. 😉

If it's an offline game, no, and who cares. It's part of the game. Not like you're hacking it. Besides, you bought it. Enjoy it the way you want to. You're not ruining anybody else's gaming experience one way or another.

Agreed. If its not a hack, and its a part of the game, its not cheating. And grinding sucks ass. I will refer you to South Park's Warcraft episode as exhibit A on the subject.

We've been doing Nyzul, but that's getting old. I think Salvage is next.

In the context stated in the OP, no.

Any way used to circumvent grinding in a single player game isn't really cheating unless you employ a hack of some sort...

If you are doing it to avoid grinding, I see no reason why it would be cheating. If you are skipping part of the main story or overcoming a part of the story through a shortcut then I'd say you are "cheating" yourself out of how the game designer wanted you to play the game.
