Just watched "blood the last vampire" at my buddies house and this is a fresh install of win2k sp2, with a ATI 64 radeon.. now, it crashed the system COMPLETELY two times when trying to search through the movie, had to hard boot both times. I'm worried if it's his setup that is being unstable or just the ATI software. I've never had to hard boot my win2k so it was a surprise to me that it was happening on a new install. Thanks.

smp,

We're going to need more data to help you with that one...
What system, drivers, ATI DVD Player version, etc. Is DMA enabled for the DVD drive? Any IRQ conflicts or sharing for either DVD drive or ATI card?

I had problems with my DVD first time I tried it (choppy and stuttering), but it turned out to be the IRQ for the video card was being shared with another card (Soundblaster, I think). Moving the SB to a different slot caused it to use a different IRQ. That was under Win-ME, so your 2K troubles may be caused by something else, but it's a start...

I have found that to be true. As for IRQ conflict, that is a possibility, but under ACPI, it is notsupposed to be. I have always found that AGP video cards are much happier with no sharing of their IRQ. In most mobos, PCI slot 1 is linked to the AGP slot . . . same IRQ. So, my unwritten rule is NOTHING goes in PCI Slot 1.

When I installed my DVD drive AFTER the Radeon 64 DRR was installed, I tried the ATI DVD player. It truly was suck. I downloaded and installed WinDVD 3.0 and and it played perfectly. It was then a no brainer. WinDVD was in . . . ATI DVD was out.

I've never had a problem with the ATi DVD player on my PC, with any of the hundreds of movies I've watched using it, under Win 98, Me, or 2000. It actually plays DVD's that won't even load on my set-top player.

So perhaps your problem lies elsewhere? Is the DVD you were trying to play clean?

Clean as a whistle! Same thing happened in two computers. My laptop uses PowerDVD and has no problems. Be that as it may . . . the end result is that everything works perfectly with WinDVD and it locks up with Ati. It's a no brainer!

If yours works perfectly with Ati, then perhaps there are other factors involved such as the DVD drive itself, the sound system, the mobo . . . BIOS, too many variables. Just go with what works. :)

ATI + Win2k = SUCK in general. I've never liked their dvd solutions. Personally, I'd get Creatives Encore series before any ATI product.
