Ive actually downgraded from a HD 4890 to a 8800GT and havent looked back. Due to the driver I actually display more FPS from the older, less powerfull 8800GT than the 4890.

If you "haven't looked back" because the 8800GT is maxing out your monitor, why did you ever buy the 4890 to begin with? Looking at a 4890 from an 8800GT is the same as looking at a 4890 from an 8800GT.

If:
4890<----8800GT (no reason to look in this direction)

Then
8800GT--->4890 (no reason to look in this direction)

AFAIK you still can't even get a folding GPU client that fully supports ATI's 5xxx series without severe performance drops. Thats almost a year later....

Heck, you can't even get a folding GPU client that full supports HD 4x00 series, it only works, but uses less than half of its computing power, but that's not AMD's fault, its F@H fault for being so slow in the development of optimized clients, we don't know much about AMD's involvement in the project, but considering that they don't dwell too much with developer's relationship...

We'll just ignore some of the nVidia has had issues with their cards over the years such as notoriously bad display drivers when Vista first came out. The state of the Vista drivers was actually worse than ATI's Vista drivers and I was using an 8800 at the time. We'll also ignore the features nVidia promised on their cards that were never present (granted ATI is no better in this regards). We'll also ignore the video card killing drivers. ATI sucks. No question about it.

LOL - so go intel!?!?!
