Well obviously you would have to keep your data plan, which the medianet plan is. You're bringing up alot of what ifs.. this is not something difficult to do. Plenty of people have done the iPhone thing on the xda and howardforums.

yea i guess, im sure if you make a stink about it, theyll probably let you.

Question: Anyone know how much a euro nexus prime will end up costing me? Im 90% sure thats the route im gonna have to take. I was hoping to pay around 600-700 tops.

what ive been doing for the past 2 years. I was just hoping i could get it through att and not have to go through the hassle of buying and selling a 4s. Plus i wont have insurance on my prime now.

just wondering, is the prime release date for the international version that will work on att out? and can you buy both the lte and 3g version of the phone?

Like i said, if i can permanently switch off lte, and only use it when i need it, thats cool, but id rather have better battery with 3g.

Squaretrade?

I am eligble for an upgrade, so I would buy the iphone 4s sell it (make ~400) then I buy an international Samsung. Do I call att and cancel my data plan then? Don't I have to pay the ETF at this point?
i bought a 4s and resold it and got an international sgs2. works great too and much cheaper because you can get on the dumbphone plan.

Pretty sure they mandate you have a data plan for a certain amount of time when you buy a subsidized smart phone.

I can also see them breaking this rule if the following scenario happens. You buy an iphone, coming from a phone with no data plan. You lose the iphone, and arent able to get a new smartphone. should you then be required to keep the data package even though you dont have a phone capable anymore?

You can cancel and downgrade to MediaNet for sure. I'm pretty sure if you can do this, you can cancel the data plan. You're locked in for a voice plan only with a 2 year contract. Data is a feature on the side. You could cancel it even with your iPhone if you wanted.

I don't think you can do it with an iPhone. You are required to have a data plan with one.

I downgraded to MediaNet before with an iPhone 3GS. You are not reuqired to have a data plan with one unless you start using data.

My mom had an iPhone 3GS without a data plan.

AT&T can detect whether you have an iphone or a subsidized smartphone. if they detect you with medianet, they will "upgrade" you to a smartphone dataplan and the rapeage will ensue.

that's why you buy a phone off contract not through AT&T so they will have less a chance of having the IMEI of your phone in their database. YMMV, as the google nexus phones all had their phones upgraded to a smartphone dataplan.

Just curious, how does one take a non-contract phone to AT&T and use it? In other words, does AT&T have any sort of "bring your own device" plan that's cheaper than the normal plans where they are subsidizing your smartphone? I am on such a plan with T-Mobile but I didn't think AT&T had anything similar.

rate plans are the same whether you own the phone outright or subsidized

I realize that. You're only upgrade to the Smartphone plan if you USE your smartphone on the MediaNet plan and the IMEI is on AT&T's list of smartphone devices.

I was just saying you're free to do whatever you want with your data plan (downgrade, cancel, etc.) The 2 year contract has NOTHING to do with the data plan. Too many people believe that data is required or something. You can get a new iPhone, cancel the data plan, and you would be fine if you ensure your iPhone doesn't ever use data (except wifi).

Verizon on the other hand I believe it's harder to go without data. This is primarily because you need to call them to activate a phone, and since it has to be a VZW phone, there's no bring your own phone policy.

AT&T on the other hand is a GSM carrier and you can stick whatever phone you want onto their network. You pay for whatever you use (data).
