Is Asus A8N-E The right selection for my computer ?

I wanted to buy this computer :

- AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - BOX
- GIGABYTE GA-K8NF-9 NFORCE4
- TWINMOS DDR 512MB 400mhz CL2.5 x2
- WD 200GB 7200RPM 8MB JD SATA
- LEADTEK WinFast PX6600GT TDH Extreme 128MB DDR PCI-EXPRESS
- CREATIVE LIVE 24-bit 7.1 BULK
- NEC ND-3540A Dual Layer DVD±R/W/DL 16X BLACK
- COMPUCASE CI-6A19 BLACK
- Samsung SyncMaster 930B

but after reading about the A8N-E, I think it might be the smarter choice...
I've read the Sticky on choosing a motherboard but it didn't really help me make a choice.

So should I advance to Asus A8N-E with WD 200GB 7200RPM SATA2, for less than 30 bucks ?

is the noisy fan problem of the ASUS A8N-E still relevant ?

BTW - I'm no OC-ing this computer...

thanks...

Why don't you just go for the EPoX 9NPA+ Ultra? Or since you're not overclocking the Chaintech VNF4 Ultra board will do just fine. It's been out on the market for quite some time now so most of the kinks should be worked out.

If firewire isn't important to you then go A8N-E. I'm getting in mixed reports about whether Revision 2.0 boards have the quieter fan or not.

I see,
do revision 2 boards have a different product number ?
how can I find out if what they sell in the store are the revision 2 ones...

what are the pros and cons for getting the A8N-E
and what are the pros / cons for the K8NF ?

The A8N-E is thee best board for NON SLI users hands down, Do not get the Gigabyte I owned one It has the A1 Chipset on it, and it only does 4x Multi, Cuz of the NF4-MCP chipset its a earlier version of the Ultra (A2), So jsut get the Asus. 🙂

P.S Rev. 2.00 boards are being shipped I have a Rev. 2 it has the upgraded Fan.

I would really like to buy the ASUS, but it's just too risky,
what if I get the old one, the store I'm buying from states it's the revision 2,
but says nothing about the fan.

I really don't know what to do.
if it's a better motherboard as-is ( no Overclocking ) I'm willing to take it,
if it's better only when overclocking than I don't need it.

besides, there are some REALLY BAD REVIEWS about the motherboard in this forum ( besides the noisy fan )

The posts are coming from people that dont know how to install a computer thats why they post there posts. 🙂

I beg to differ on this one. There are two mobos I have experience with that in my experience are just as good or better than the the ASUS. One is the EPoX 9NPA+Ultra, and I have 20 (twenty) builds using that board under my belt. I have used the A8N-E and was frankly not all that impressed. It lacks features, and ASUS is still trying to get the BIOS right.

The newly released AOpen nForce4 Ultra board is the latest nForce4 Ultra board I am playing with right now, and it is proving to be extremely stable with no bad habits. It is just short on bundle. At least it has firewire, which the ASUS does not.

I was strongly considering the ASUS A8N-E but posts about problems and the active NB cooling deterred me. I went with the Abit AN8 Ultra (passive heatpipe cooling on the Northbridge) and I'm glad I did. I took for granted the fact that my two previous systems were rock solid Abit-powered ones (NF7-S 2.0 with Barton 2500+ and several 2.8C's on an IC7).

I did have one small problem with the AN8 Ultra (one of my LCD's not showing up on DVI) that was easily fixed by flashing to the latest BIOS. No problems now, I've got RAM voltage up to 3.55V and settings for everything I could want.

Is ASUS A8N-E good at overclcoking? I need to hit atleast 250-270Mhz ro run my 3500+ @2.6-2.7Ghz, and that preferably at 1:1 sync with my OCZ DDR500 1GB RAM. Really need any input on this.

I want this board as I don't need SLI and the proce is really good on this board.

The A8N-E is a great MB... the loud northbridge fan issue has been fixed with the diamond shaped fan. I have the new revision board with the new fan and it's perfectly quiet... may not be dead silent, but it's definitely not at all intrusive.

The board is easy to setup, stable, and fast... I would recommend to anyone.

If you really want to push your overclocks, look at the DFI line. They can push higher voltages, but if you don't plan on using more than 3.0V (RAM) and 1.55V(CPU) then this is a fine board to overclock with. You may need to do a simple step to fix the stuck HTT problem.

Yes, revision 2 does include a quieter fan. Even if you get a revision one, you can call Asus and they will ship you the quieter revision 2 fan.

As you know, the main con of the A8N-E is the lack of firewire. But I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the A8N-E. Overclocking, you may be better off with a DFI one.

Hey, this is for wobble wobble or whoever knows... You may need to do a simple step to fix the stuck HTT problem.

I have the A8N-e version 2 and the fan is very quiet. I can't even hear it over my other fans. So that's nice, but I can't seem to be able to overclock at all hardly. When I use the utility given on the ASUS Cd called Nvidia n-tune (automatically finds best stable performance settings) my system doesn't run stable. I think it is the HTT problem you were talking about. n-tune prompted me to stop the PCI bus from tracking the HTbus, because if one was increased the other would also be as well. n-tune said it could damage my system.... so do you know how to turn this behavior off? Any help would be awesome.
