Is ArticSilver II garbage?

I bought tube of ASII from Frys a few weeks ago and have been using it on my 1.2Ghz Tbird with the retail HS/fan from a 1.4Ghz box. I have noted that my temps would start out in around 43-45C range at idle and perhaps 50 under load, then slowly over a period of days my idle temp would start to climb till I would be seeing 47! The first time this occured I pullled the HS/fan and reapplied ASII, same thing over agian. This time I noted that my HS may have been riding on one of the Shuttle AK31s chipset fan screws. I filed the edge of the HS to ensure there was no contact then reapplied ASII. A week later the pattern repeated itself inaddtion the system required multible efforts to get a POST. This afternoon I pulled the HS/fan then carefully with rubbing alchol and q tips removed every trace of ASII from my processor. This time I have applied Radio Shack thermal compound. My processor is now at 43C the lowest I have seen it for weeks.

Why am I getting such poor performance from the ASII?

mm... have you read the instructions at ArcticSilver's site? It says that in the first 2 days or so the temperature will not go down drasticaly. It takes a while for the particles to maximize in positions. Also, how did you apply the ACII? You didn't use your fingers, did you?

Well since my temp is still at 42C with Radio shack it must say something about cleaning off the pad!

I would not mind the temp not going down but it was going up!

I spread it thin with the edge of CC. no did not touch the goop (willingly)
