Is Apple finally getting it?

Disclaimer: I am a PC owner who has never owned a Mac. But this is just something I've noticed.

Take a look at this: Apple PowerPC G4 Dual 867 MHz.

Is it just me, or is that a reasonably priced Mac? Granted, it's not top of the line, and granted, it's more expensive than a comparable PC, but dual 867 MHz processors, I would think, would pretty much fly on OSX.

Maybe slap another 256 MB RAM chip in there and [possibly] a GeForce 4 Ti4200, and you'd have yourself a pretty darn good Photoshop/gaming box with an awesome OS, an awesome case/aesthetic design, and a great company to back it up.

Edit: the link's not working now but just go to the Apple website and take a look at the Dual 867 MHz G4.

Heh.... perhaps.

If you do what you suggest (add 256 MB RAM and upgrade the Vid card to "NVIDIA GeForce4 Titanium 128MB DDR") the price comes out to $2199. That's a far cry from the 1699 we started with.

Nothing Apple has ever released flies OSX. Try more than 3x IE windows. You'll see what I mean.

Okay - I agree with you that to get it up to "Gamer" spec it will take a lot of $$.

But for a first PC for someone just learning computers but who wants a 'designer' system, I'd go for the Mac. Can't be beat for GUI and box design. And Dual ANYTHING makes me drool.

No, the computer still sucks... and those 867 MHz CPU's actually run like 867 MHz CPU's.. they are not very fast. MAC is a total rip-off i will always believe! 😀

If you are looking for affordability I would suggest the eMac G4. I think that the all-in-one design with the features of 17" flat screen, G4 700, combo drive make a pretty good basic computer for grandma/girlfriend with a nice price of ~$1000.

In response to the topic: yes, I think they are. Thier machines are still more expensive than your homebuilt PCs, true. But they come with an OS, a warranty, DVD player, development software, etc.

Yeah, I know, Dell machines come with that stuff too. Go look at a G4 tower, then at a Dell PC, and tell me which one you think is the better computer.

What? For probably $600-700 total you could build someone a PC that would be more than adequete for the tasks you described.

Besides, we just had a massive thread about this a short while ago.

You can always get a Windows theme that works JUST like that GUI. Dual CPUs = waste of money. You're not running multi-threaded programs are you? You're not watching TV and playing Q3A at the same time are you? Didn't think so. That's just like getting a 1.8Ghz Celeron for gaming.

You can't be learning to use a computer and be a designer at the same time (and I'm not talking about drawing a line is photo shop). One has to learn how to operate a computer before they become a designer. So, something like an iMac will be cheaper if they want to get into Macs. And later when he does decide to move in to a new SGI system, he can use the imac as a fish tank. 😉 (it does look cool as a fish tank).

I was at Seybold last week. Apple was demoing daul 1.25ghz G4's with GF4 cards in them. They were playing 2 quicktime movies at once, rendering alpha blended 3d objects in front of them (they were transluscent 3d rendered spinning gears and things), with photoshop, Indesign, IE, and several other apps open at once. They were also powering dual 23" displays at 1920x1200 resolution. All this was happening at 90fps, with about 10% CPU usage.

Did you know that the GUI for OS X 10.2 is rendered in OpenGL.... in hardware?

"...i will always believe..."

So, basically, you're saying that your opinion doesn't count for jack cause it's never going to change, and you're still basing it on os 7 and the 68k processors?

What? For probably $600-700 total you could build someone a PC that would be more than adequete for the tasks you described.

Yep. PCs are still cheaper.

for under a $1000, you could put together a P4 system that will beat any Mac out there in a majority of benchies.

Really? Can you list these benchmarks for me?

You can't be learning to use a computer and be a designer at the same time...

He meant designer as in Tommy Hilfiger, not designer as in AutoCad.

I'm very happy with my single 867MHz G4. I've got 27 IE windows open right now with no lag, so I'm not quite sure what your getting at with that comment. I do know, however, that my AthlonXP 1700+ machine hasn't been started in about a month and a half at this point........

Most people who spout off about how crappy Apple's product are probably have not used them lately.

I used to blindly bash Apple and all of their hardware, but one day curiosity got the best of me. I picked up a used G4/350 (from FS/T) and found that I really liked it. OS X 10.2 is so much faster than 10.1.x, it isn't even funny. Plus, being the nix dork that I am, I love that I can just open a terminal and start hacking away.

The one thing I can say about Apple is that they defintely put a lot of time and effort into anything they design, be it hardware or software. They need to get the prices on their PowerMac towers down a few hundred dollars and ship it with a two-button scroll mouse. Those are the two things that Mac-haters base most of their arguements on. Then you will start to see a lot of those people who bash their products actually take a second look.

Define how an 867 mhz CPU performs.

G4's have a shorter pipeline than a P3 (G4 = 7 stages, P3 = 12, P4 = 20), they are a hell of a lot faster than an 867 Mhz P4, P3, Athlon, or whatever you want x86 processor would be.
