Is Aol's AOL Plus service legit?

I was looking at this OFFER. At $40 a month for DSL, it sounds pretty good. Has anyone had any experience with them? Knowing AOL, there's probably some catch I havent noticed. Thanks.

You probably gotta use the AOL crap software to access it, or hack your way around it. And then they probably send you through their junk proxy servers so you can't post here. If you can get DSL through AOL, why not just get it through your phone company?

<< Yea, the catch is that it's AOL. >>

Well that's the only way they could give it that name. It is actually 42.90 a month. It is legit. Make sure that if you get DSL from anyone that if your house has an alarm system, some forms of digital cable or a medical alert system that they are properly filtered.

Yeah, not to mention that AOL browser is the biggest load of sh1t I have ever seen. I had to use it at this jobsite for two damn weeks. If you try to shutdown the browser, it knocks you off line. They suck.

Hmm, it seems to use the proprietary 5.0 software. That thing is bad news.

Wrong. Thank you for playing anyway.

I agree. Internet Explorer is a real peice of garbage.

<< If you try to shutdown the browser, it knocks you off line >>

I guess trying to fix the computer was harder than blaming AOL.

FiDo14DiDo,

While everyone tells you here not to use it, nobody really gave you a real reason why. That offer is totally legit and AOL offers you first month free, so try it for yourself and see if you like it.

NO SH!T? I better rush right out and cancel my RoadRunner because they said the same thing. Their service must be crap too even though I have been happily using it for two years.

sure sure sign up for dsl and watch your dsl provider go out of business.

remember aol doesn't own the wires for dsl. They only own roadrunners' cable wires :)

The only problems I see is AOL's slow proxies and you have to log in every time you use it.

Other than that, opening IE or NS over AOL's crappy software cures the inbedded browser woes.

Oh, and unlike normal DSL or cable, AOL's software must remain open while you're online... and it's quite resource hungry. If you close AOL's software, you are logged off line.

Remember no one but the phone company owns the wires for DSL.

exactly. But AOL's cable modem service, when it comes out, will be entirely owned by aol.. So that will be pretty reliable, in theory, whenever they get around to it in wide scale. Probably not another year or so at least.

yakko, i believe the browser he is talking about is the one with the mail and keword search, yes we all know it uses IE, but the integrated one is no way the same 5.5 we look at everyday...and if it is it still sucks bc of the bloated aol programs that has to be open...heh, and people thought icq was bloatware.

btw, roadrunner guy helped me fine tune my network. guess im lucky

If you want to call the main program a browser go right ahead but you won't get to any web pages without IE installed on your system. The only reason it doesn't look like IE is the same reason that my Voyager 5000 browser doesn't look like IE even though it is.

And yes I know that some of the RoadRunner guys will help out but it is mainly out of boredom. When they reach a point where they can't figure something out they will tell you they don't support it.

It will be a lot longer than a year, if at all, before they put AOL cable out because they amount of money needed to change the network already in place is ridiculous. Before you even ask the network does have to be changed to allow other ISPs to lease the cable lines just like they do with DSL. RoadRunner will have no choice but to lease the lines thanks to our wonderful government.

yakko - don't even bother. Any time AOL comes up you're bound to have a ton of ignorant morons come in spouting that it's a POS. I've found that there are just as many, if not more, ignorant AOL bashers than there are ignorant AOL users.
