How do they know where to tab to?

Not that I doubt you, I just don't get it.

i'd link a video of him doing it, if i had one

he just figures it out, the software is written to go to the key buttons/links on a page and reads the label of the button/link, then he know that is either what he wants and selects it, or he keeps going until he gets to what he is expecting/looking for. if he can't find it, he goes back to square one, ie google or other search engine or back to the place where you type in an URL

a really good memory makes it easier, he memorizes 'where' everything is in windows/browser
maybe there is one on youtube or the JAWS website

sixone is right, that's not worth it. If I were blind I rather just sit alone in my room doing nothing. Who needs the internet

Figuratively or literally?

Just a note.

A friend of mine is legally blind (macular degeneration). And he has a drivers license. Though, he is not supposed to drive after dark.

i am sure you are joking, this guy is/was a computer engineer, a good job. blind people can do almost everything sighted people can, working with this guy for 8 years taught me that. especially with today's technology, like this JAWS program

his main issue was always transportation, since he can't drive to work. if he had lived in an area with mass transport/bus service, that wouldn't have been too big a deal either

That's really cool, thank you for posting the links. It seems counter-intuitive to have the software read only the parts of the page that you want, when you can't see which ones you want, but it makes a lot more sense now. 🙂
