Is anyone impressed with BeOs?

HUGE difference. The file system arrangements are both like unix, but that's about it. Be has a more Mac-Like feel to the GUI, and it seems to be faster. It also has better SMP support, and using a journaling file system which doesn't get as corrupted if the machine unexpectedly loses power (linux should have a journaling fs by kernel 2.4 though). Be isn't mutli-user though, and is more client-oriented than server, so depending on your use Linux could be the better choice. Also, if you (like me) do any Java development, Be doesn't support that hardly at all, but does support other languages if you download the right compilers/utilities. Overall, as a desktop OS (for web browsing, listening to music, and doing work), I thinkg Be's better, though I do use Linux extensively as well. For gaming though, use Windows (or even linux now that some decent game are coming out for it).

There is an absolutely huge difference between Be these days and the first version I ever played with (DR8.2).

Be is actually quite a good OS. It makes way better use of SMP than WinNT/2000 does. Be is intended as the Media OS which you can tell by the amount of exAmiga folk working at Be.

I just wish it had a decent game for it.. like Q3A or even UT.

In other words...Be is a good graphical worksation whereas Linux is a good multiuser workstation. I think for everything else, I would stick with Windows(browsing, gaming...whatever)

I like Be alright, like everyone has said, its for multimedia. Kinda reminds me of the old Amiga stuff too. But some stuff on it does suck, I get comb lines in the TV tuner and the web browser is sub-par. I would consider it a worthy OS, however.

Yes. Very much so. :)

First off, to be clear, BeOS != *nix. The only immediate similarity between *nix and BeOS is that BeOS includes the bash shell as it's CLI environment. From there, any similarity ends. Apples and oranges type stuff. - For starters, BeOS is GUI based, and I'd doubt anyone could argue linux is that.

BeOS was designed from the ground up to be the "right" type of OS. ie: not making the same mistakes as others. It's designed to be a desktop OS. IMO, it does this better than anything else on the market, providing a (fairly) intuitive GUI, and a distinct lack of "cruft" or bloat, despite it's shortcomings.

As for it's shortcomings, namely games and a web browser, The new OpenGL re-write should improve the former, with early benches showing it to outrun both windows and linux, and a q3a port being in the works (so I hear). I've also heard rumors of netscape being ported to Be, concerning the latter.
