I just got home from visiting my Aunt and Uncle's new house. They live in a secluded development in the Blue ridge mountains. The town is Traveller's Rest, a bit north of Greeneville. The area is absolutely beautiful with forests and mountains as far as you can see.

The warm weather (lack of snow/ice and that terrible salt) would also mean that I would only need one vehicle. I wouldn't need to keep a beater vehicle to drive during the winter as I do in NY.

From the few days I spent down there the cost of living also seems relatively low. I don't smoke but brand name cigarettes were $2.75, versus $7 or so here. Gas was about $1.79 for premium instead of $2.20 here. Groceries seemed the same or maybe a smidgen more down there. I looked at some real estate ads, and housing seems about the same as here. Decent ranch style starter homes are in the $90-120k area. Taxes are also lower. Sales tax is 5% versus 7-8% here. State income taxes also seem to be lower from what I have heard. I'm not sure about property taxes.

Another thing, the people down there are incredibly polite. I was astonished! I'd heard about southern hospitality, but it went above my expectations.

So for those of you that read this far, thanks! I'm looking for opinions on how you like living down there. Any other cost of living information would be great too. What is car insurance and registration like?

If it matters, I'll be looking for software engineering jobs in the Greeneville/Columbia area.

I'm not from South Carolina but I've lived here for the last four years after we moved here. My parents live in Columbia and I do, too, now that I'm finished with school (Clemson, not far from Greenville). You made some pretty good observations and pretty much hit the nail on the head. SC's not a bad place to live. I'm partial to the upstate area around Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, and Clemson, as opposed to Columbia, which I don't like at all and can't wait to move out of if the opportunity comes. I don't know much about the coastal area outside of the fact that it's nice.
 
Oh and don't speak to nicely about the place. It is better that people think it is a place filled with stupid inbred rednecks that should be avoided at all cost. We have enough northerners.

Isn't it rather flat near the coast? It's mostly flat plains or rolling hills up here in NY. I prefer the mountains much more.

I have never been there. Maybe next time I am down I will head out that way. I was only in SC for a few days for a wedding.

I work with someone originally from Charleston and he loves the area. I had a chance to travel there on a buisness trip last year and it was indeed a very nice town. The downtown area was one most beautiful I've seen in a city.
 
It does get cold here in the upstate, but it's not like 20 below zero for 3 days straight or anything. I kinda enjoy that anyways. It's a great place to live.

Yeah it is flat on the coast but I prefer the coastal breeze.

Don't believe the hype. Sure Charleston has its charm at times...but the surrounding area sucks and other than the Beach...there isn't a whole lot too Charleston. The downtown is fun...but nothing spectacular. They do have a lot of good looking college-age girls though.

I think the Greenville area is so much nicer. Quick access to some beautiful lates (Keowee and Jocasse are awesome lakes). The mountains are close by and the town of Greenville is fun and growing. Plenty to do no matter what you are into.

Now if they had some decent waves in Charleston so that you could actually surf...maybe I'd give it an leg up on Greenville...but since the waves are as timid as they come this side of the gulf coast...I'll stick to Greenville.

i might have to agree.. i love charleston..

theres this nice vacation island nearby called Kiawah Island as well... its amazing how nice it is...

I agree. Our first choice for places to live, is near the mountains of NC. SC is too hot and muggy. NC has all the same qualities you mentioned as well.
 
If you're going to move to the Greenville area, make sure you look in the surrounding areas (Berea, Greer, Taylors) as housing will be cheaper. But do yourself a favor and don't move to "TR" as it is so affectionately referred to by everyone else.

Probably the greatest highlight for that town in the last year was that they built a Krystal just a few months ago.
