Is anyone else tired of "identity politics"?

This morning I saw a news headline "surge in latino votes secures Trump's win in FL". Following by an article about AOC chastizing the Democratic party for not attracting latino voters. Then theres all the talk of the "black vote"..."the asian vote"...etc.

Why in today's climate of sensitive racial issues do we continue to separate people by race? Why couldnt the headline read "surge of conservative American voters secures Trump's win in FL?

Agree with you in principle, but people are not monolithic. Conservative American voters of different race may have different viewpoints/wants/etc so it may not be beneficial politically to group them all together. Just IMO.

I'm all for identity politics if we're divided into 4 identities:

1. Corporate Overlords/ Billionaires
2. Those on the Payroll of the Corporate Overlords & Billionaires
3. The Former Middle Class but Currently the Working Poor
4. Religious/ Ethnic Supremacists

Too bad it doesn't work that way.

Calling them "conservative" is itself a form of identity politics. "Identity politics" is just a way of decrying grouping people in certain ways while continuing to group them in other ways.

Yes. I once heard a guy describe himself as an extreme centrist and since then, I describe myself as such. Both sides have their blinders on to various facts and I in good faith can't side with either because I side with science and logic.

You do realize that the Republican Party campaigns basically exclusively on identity politics, right?

I realize both partys do. Hell...AOC got her panties in a bunch today because she didnt think the Dems were catering enough to the latino vote.

You will never stop the news media from placing people into racial, cultural or ideological boxes.

It is futile to try.

What a surprise that Cubans didn't want to vote for a socialist ticket. They know better.

Broadly speaking I agree that both parties engage in identity politics to an extent, but Democrats at least have a concrete policy agenda. Republicans are entirely identity politics based.

I guess what I'm saying is if you want to stop identity politics conservatives need to clean their own house first.

Nobody who "sides" with science or logic would ever claim bothsides bullshit.

LOL, let's put global warming up against women with penises. Yeah, neither side can claim the moral high ground in science.

Yep. I was watching last night when they were going to great lengths to explain that not all Latino peoples are the same, and I was like... really? Just never ceases to amaze.

Right now I identify with decency and honesty. Fine with me because that puts all the hypocrites, liars, conspiracy theorists, racists with the other group. And we all know who they are.

I didn't know anyone even remotely close to a socialist was in the race.
To Trumpers, the word "socialism" means equal protection of the laws, and not the actual definition of an economic system with govt ownership of the means of production. Because if they actually meant the latter, they'd vote against Trump for how he and Powell's Fed have taken over the economy this year.

Nope. Different cultural groups are still treated differently and have their own goals, even though there's usually a lot in common.

This doesn't mean you treat cultural groups as monolithic blocs that always vote the same way, but it makes sense to recognize trends that are distinct to a particular group.

That and the people who rush to proclaim "I don't see color" are frequently the ones who turn a blind eye to racism unless it's glaringly obvious. Yeah, ideally we'd live in a Star Trek-like world where everyone lives in harmony and no one is oppressed, but we're nowhere near that right now; we need to acknowledge problems rather than pretend we've already triumphed.

Okay, now let's weight the seriousness of each of those topics on a scale from "are you fucking kidding me with this bullshit right now" to "Hurricane Katrina every year from now on."

The simple fact is there is identity in this nation based upon race, religion and ethnicity. Blackness is a thing. Can we focus too much on it? Yes we can. But we also can't ignore it. We just have to find the right balance. This country was founded on identity politics and we have a ways to go. I'm 45 years old, only 10 years before I was born were blacks given some civil rights. We just like to think we magically made it all go away since.

Trump played identity politics big starting with his campaign announcement speech - basically calling most Hispanics (using the term Mexicans, a catch all word for those south of us crossing the border), rapists and criminals. It worked.
