Of course it's historic. Forget the fact that he's black and just dwell on the premise that he is inheriting a foreign war on two fronts, an economic recession, and bad blood boiling up again in the middle east.

Now, the way the media dresses up his inauguration is another story.

Yeah, it's pretty sad that the 24hr "news" media and others are constantly gushing and drooling about "african-American" - as if that means anything. It doesn't, he's not "african-American" - he's American. Why is it that some people seem to WANT to look at race depending on the positivity or negativity of it? IMO, his Inauguration is no more "historic" than any other inauguration.

You can't possibly, even remotely believe its not historic? No one can be that detached from reality. Can they?

Interesting htat CSG would attempt to invoke rationality when the whole basis of the rightwing pitch has been irrational for the last 40 years... pandering to racial sentiment in ways both conscious and not...

States' Rights! Forced busing! Silent Majority! Law and Order! Family values! Values! Welfare Queens! Entitlements! Willie Horton! The list goes on, and it's just another way to move racial sentiment into the realm of the abstract while exploiting it all the same. From Lee Atwater's piece in Wiki-

Atwater: You start out in 1954 by saying, ?great person, *****, *****.? By 1968 you can't say ?*****??that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now [that] you're talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites.

And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I'm not saying that. But I'm saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me?because obviously sitting around saying, ?We want to cut this,? is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than ?great person, *****.?

Edit- CSG isn't detached form reality, at all, but that doesn't mean he's attempting to hook anybody else up to it, either... his mission, such as it is, is entirely the opposite...

Its not about reading comprehension. Your statement is totally moronic. No matter how anyone feels, Tuesday will be one the most defining moments in the history of the planet. The US is the most powerful nation on earth. Racism that included hangings, rapes, and all kinds of stuff that occured regularly only 50 years or so ago happened in this very nation. Most of our parents grew up during this time period. Not to mentioned slavery occured for 200 plus years before that. Now a man of the same shunned people group is about to become the president of this very nation. Regardless of politics, religion, color, ethnic background, or where ever you live on this planet, Tuesday is historic. So much so it goes beyond just US history, this will be world history. He may turn out good or bad, but the importance of the day is undeniable.

Yes it is. Nowhere did I stated that I "believe its not historic" like you tried to claim. You obviously didn't read what I've written - or did and FAILED to comprehend.

Um, no. Just because you feel that way doesn't mean that everyone does. He is a man. If you choose to label people black or white, that's your business. Don't make the rest of us jump for joy that a black man is now president. As far as I'm concerned, he is a man. Live with it.

I'm annoyed by it rather than anything. Remember Superbowl 41 Colts/Bears. the sports media was repeating first black head coach over and over and over again. with Obama its worst and I suspect they'll repeat it for atleast the 1st year. I get he's black or half black. No need to repeat it every chance you can get. Its been made that if his administration fails, Obama's best accomplishment is being first black president. Then there's the stupid puff pieces about how now black kids can dream about being president. So asians, latinos, native americans, etc should put dreams of being president on hold?

Its not about how you or I feel. Or anyone for that matter. You can try to donwplay the significance all you want. No one I have seen has made him out to be more than just a man. And its not even aboout joy. This is a fact, a man who is of a race that for many many years was downtrodden in the most powerful nation on earth is about to become its leader. Regardless of emotion or any other circumstances this is a historic moment in history. It doesn't matter whether you or I like him. Its history and it is epic.

Ron Paul was the best person for the job, by far, but Obama is what we deserve. We'll see what that means in coming months and years.

Some folks would assume I didn't vote for Obama because he's black and I'm white, but that isn't true -- I'd vote for Alan Keyes in a heartbeat!! Alan Keyes' beliefs and values are much more in line with what I believe - THAT is why I would vote for him and NOT for Obama.

I usually have the same mindset but this case is different. I think it is very significant and it is going to be a major benchmark used by historians a hundred years from now reconstructing the history of America, maybe just as much as an Emancipation Proclamation (not in actual implications, but they would share a mark on a timeline). He wasn't just hired to do a job he was elected to be the leader of the country, the face of America if you will.

edit: especially when you consider whites will eventually become the minority.. here is the mark at which America chose its face to be a person of mixed race

TITCR, I could not agree more. If what this nation wants is more government control, they'll get it. We'll see where that leads us. The Founder's vision of America has been brutalized by the federal government, and will see much rise in power through Obama's administration. How long until this nation realizes government intervention is not the solution to problems...

Exactly, like when there are upsurges in crime, we need LESS cops, not more.

Yeah. If an increase in cops, abuse, and stripping of rights caused the god damn problems in the first place.

color me denying the importance. I just don't get it. one sorta black guy got elected... Tuesday afternoon, after the swearing in ceremony, the world is going to be fundamentally unchanged. racism will still exist, the history of civil rights will still be what it is. the serious problems facing some black communities will still be serious and still be problems and still be largely ignored by the establishment.

the democrats could have nominated Adolf Hitler in 2008 and still won the election, which makes me skeptic of whether the election even said anything important about the state of race n Amercia.

It is a truly historic event regardless of your opinion.

yup 150 million reasons why it is. pretty soon we'll have to bail out this party.

cynical yes but spending that amount of money in this economic environment is almost criminal. But I guess if you lost 7 of the last 10 elections i guess you have been saving a bit.

Yea thats right I went there!

And if this were the first openly gay president, would you be asking why isn't everyone over it?

It is a milestone in this country that a Black person has been chosen as President - as it will be when a Women is - and when a Gay person is... It doesn't mean that the country is ever going to be rid of those that have distrust or hatred in blacks or women or gays - or that the world is going to be perfect and wine and roses just because of that elected person...

But to not appreciate it for what it is, that is a sadness within your own heart....

His election and inauguration is significant just for the fact that there was this humongous sigh of relief heard round the world as Mr. "it over there" gave his concession speech.
