Just to give you an idea where I'm coming from, I started out with B&W DM302's with an ASW500 subwoofer. This was run off a Yamaha receiver and DVD player (my intention was to build a surround system). Well, by the time I went to add the center, the 302's were discontinued so I traded in (with no loss) the 302's for Tannoy mX2's with a matching mXC center (keeping the subwoofer).
The problem is, while the movie aspect of it is nice, I don't use it enough. I listen to music way more. That being the case, I'm attempting to shift towards a higher quality 2ch setup.
The local shop is great because they have a 1 year tradeup policy on speakers. This works well because I don't have tonnes of cash to plunk down all at once. I listened to the Katan's in the store, and I was amazed. Problem is, they retail for $1350cdn. And at the same time, I only have my Yamaha for the time being. As you alluded to, it would seem a waste to jump straight to the Katan's and have to wait that much longer to upgrade the souce. I haven't heard the Kan's yet (not in the store) but my thinking was to trade the Tannoy gear in on a pair of Linn Kan's, then eventually upgrade the source and amp, and then finally move towards the Katan's (or maybe even the Ninka's if I'm lucky -- $2300cdn I think).
Whew... this hifi stuff is gonna kill me. 😕
