Is any Socket 940 compatible cooler compatible with Phenom?

Kind of a dumb question I suppose, but is an older cooler, like a Scythe Katana II, for example, going to be compatible with a 125W Phenom 9950? The specs say it is compatible with Socket 940 cpu's, but since it is an older cooler, the specs only list older CPU's that predate the Phenom. I assume it should be fine - am I right?

If it says it covers Socket 940 then yes it will cover socket 940.... However it may not have enough cooling, being an older cooler, to properly cool a hotter CPU.

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but I don't think this needs a new thread.

Would a thermalright xp-90 fit on an AM3 board and would I need to buy different brackets or anything?

I have one laying around, should be better than the stock heatsink ya?

Sure it'll be better than the stock cooler that comes with 9950. The problem might be a physical fitting depending on your board.

You'll need one of these.
