Hi everyone,

I am currently upgrading one of my system, starting with the RAM and later on MOBO + CPU, since they are so cheap. I have an old Tyan mobo S1692D, DUAL PII 266 and wondering if any kind of RAM PC100, PC133 CAS 2 (CORSAIR OR MICRON) etc will be suitable for this system. If it were you, what will be your choice for RAM, 256 or 512 MB and what is your upgrading path? I am running WIN2000 and the main application is for DOWNLOADING, and TESTING SOFWARE (3D MODELING, CAD etc), and occasionally server. Any kind of help is greatly appreciated.

System 1: ABIT KT7 RAID (RAID DISABLE), 2X 128 MUSHKIN HIGH PERF. 2 CAS 2.2.2, 32 MB PROPHET IIMX RETAIL, 2X 30GB IBM 75GXP, 1X 9GB QUANTUM KA+

System 2: TYAN S1692D, DUAL PII 266, 128MB PC66, #9 REVOLUTION 3D, 1X 12GB MAXTOR 5400RPM, 1X 9GB IBM 7200RPM.

Yes, any PC100 or PC133 (whatever you need for the motherboard/cpu frequency) will work. Personaly I would sugges that you go with 512MB of RAM, since you mention things like 3D Modeling, and running servers. Pairing up Win2K with 512MB is also a great choice, I will be doing the same, very soon, except with 512MB DDR PC2100.

Thank you for your input.

Do you have any recommendation in mind? Crucial, Micron, CL2 or not etc ?

If it was me putting RAM in that dual 266 machine I'd be putting in Generic PC133 RAM seeing as it's the same price if not less than PC100 and just as readily available if not even less common than PC133.

the reason is: those CPU's are on a 66 FSB and the PC133 RAM will not be stressed running CAS2 in any way at all at 66MHz

only need high quality RAM for pushing the limits and for utmost stability but Generic RAM for the most part is very decent enough considering it's alot cheaper.

there's my .02

good luck!

Thanks for everyone helps. Just one to let you know that I just order 3 stick of Micron 128MB CAS2 totaling $81 ($27 each). I don't want to spend too much money on that old systems.
